Downsizing is the name of the game for the entry-level Audi A8, which ditches its naturally aspirated 4.2-liter V8 in favor of a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 and is rechristened the A8 3.0T for the 2013 model year.

With the smaller engine will come a smaller price: according to Inside Line, the 2013 A8 3.0T will command $73,095 (including destination), a decrease of $6,530 from the 2012 A8 4.2. The long-wheelbase A8L will shave $6,180 off the '12 model's price and sticker at $79,395.

What the new mill won't provide is better fuel economy, at least according to the EPA: the 3.0T is rated at 17/28, which is actually down slightly from the 18/28 mpg achieved by the 4.2. The 3.0T's real world mileage could best that of the old engine, however, especially as the six-cylinder features a stop-start system that isn't reflected in EPA ratings but does save fuel in normal driving.

Whereas the old 4.2-liter makes 372 horsepower and 328 lb-ft of torque, the supercharged 3.0-liter V6 will produce 333 ponies and 325 lb-ft of twist. To cater to A8 customers looking for V8 power without the S8's substantial price increase over the 3.0T, Audi will introduce a new mid-level V8 this fall.

Expect the 3.0T's standard and optional equipment lists to essentially mirror those of the 4.2, with niceties such as 18-way power adjustable and heated front seats, brushed aluminum and walnut inlays, an adaptive air suspension and a Bose surround-sound audio system fitted as standard.

The 2013 Audi A8 and A8L 3.0T are arriving at dealerships now.
