Audi has announced a new twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 powerplant for the 2013 A8 full-size sedan. The mill will fill the gap in the A8's engine lineup left by the discontinued 4.2-liter V8 and slot between the A8 3.0T's 333-horsepower supercharged six and the S8's 520-horsepower twin-turbo V8.

To be sold in the A8 under the 4.0T badge, the engine produces 420 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. Essentially a de-tuned version of the S8's motor, the 4.0-liter is also the same unit used in S6 and S7. As in those vehicles, in the A8 it will team with an eight-speed automatic that sends power to the ground through Audi's Quattro all-wheel-drive system.

In the interests of fuel economy, the engine features a cylinder deactivation system that can shut off half the cylinders in cruising situations. To quell the unwanted vibrations and noise associated with the technology, active engine mounts and active noise control are included.

Car and Driver reports that the A8 4.0T will sticker from $81,795 for the short-wheelbase version, while $88,905 will buy a long-wheelbase model. Those prices compare to $73,095 and $79,395 for the normal and extra long 3.0T variants, respectively.
