The EPA has released official fuel economy figures for the upcoming
Buick Encore: the compact luxury crossover is rated at 25 mpg in the city, 33 mpg on the highway and 28 mpg combined in front-wheel-drive form.
General Motors says that those numbers mean the Encore is more efficient than competitors like the
Ford Escape (23/33 mpg) and
MINI Countryman S (25/32 mpg). Unlike some of its rivals, the Encore was designed to operate on normal rather than premium gasoline.
The Encore is based on the same front-drive architecture as the Chevrolet Sonic subcompact. In the interests of safety and weight savings, 60 percent of its structure is composed of high-strength steel. Power is sourced from a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder that produces 140 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque and pairs with a six-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel-drive is standard, while all-wheel-drive will also be available; efficiency ratings for the AWD Encore will be released later this year.
The Encore will begin arriving in U.S. dealerships in early 2013.
