General Motors has announced that it will recall 4,304 model year 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Ecos due to a potentially dangerous airbag issue.

In certain hard braking situations the sensing and diagnostic module can reset, a process that takes approximately three seconds. During that brief resetting period, an aggressive turn can cause the car to incorrectly sense a rollover and trigger the roof rail airbags, which could injure the driver and increase the risk of a crash. Alternatively, the issue could prevent the airbags and safety belt pretensioners from deploying in the event of an accident.

GM discovered the problem during a development test and decided to err on the side of caution and initiate a recall, despite the rare and unique circumstances required to trigger the issue. The automaker said it is not aware of any injuries or crashes as a result of the problem.

GM will begin notifying owners of the recall on June 1, at which time dealers will reprogram the SDM free of charge.
