The 2013 Ford C-MAX Energi plug-in hybrid will boast an electric range of more than 20 miles and a total range of 550 miles, the Dearborn-based automaker announced on Monday. The 2013 C-MAX Energi is available for order now and will arrive in showrooms later this year.

Ford says it recently drove the C-MAX Energi from Sacramento to San Diego on a single tank of gas, covering a total distance of 550 miles. Ford notes that more than 20 of those miles were done on pure battery power, nearly doubling the electric range of the Toyota Prius plug-in.

"We are proud C-MAX Energi is the first plug-in hybrid that can deliver a 550-mile overall range and more than 20 miles of electric range as it gives customers great flexibility to commute to work, then take off for a road trip while passing many gas stations along the way," John Davis, chief nameplate engineer for Ford's compact cars and utility vehicles, said.

The 2013 C-MAX Energi, which Ford says matches the Prius plug-in with an EPA rating of 95 MPGe, is available for order now with a starting price of $25,995.
