Ford's high-performance 2013 Focus ST will arrive with fuel economy ratings of 23mpg in the city and 32 on the highway (26mpg combined), good enough to earn the hatchback 'best in-class' bragging rights.

Those ratings beat out the Focus ST's closest rivals, manual versions of the MazdaSpeed3 and the Volkswagen Golf GTI. The 2012 Speed3 is rated at 18/25mpg city/highway while the 2012 version of the GTI is rated at 21 mpg in the city and 31mpg on the highway.

"We're putting the "˜power' in the power of choice, again," said Raj Nair, Ford group vice president, Global Product Development. "This is just one more example of the "˜win-win' in the Focus ST narrative."

Set to hit dealer lots in the coming weeks, the 2013 Focus ST is powered by a 252 horsepower, 270 lb-ft of torque version of Ford's turbocharged 2.0L EcoBoost four-cylinder. A six-speed manual will be the ST's lone transmission choice.

The Ford Focus ST will carry a base price of $23,700.
