Ford is taking a novel approach to releasing pricing information for the upcoming 2013 Fusion: instead of providing the base price first, the automaker has started things off by announcing that the new sedan's optional start-stop system will cost $295.

The move underscores how much the Blue Oval is looking to emphasize the fuel efficiency of the next-generation Fusion. The stop-start system, which shuts off the engine when the car is stationary and would otherwise be idling, can improve fuel economy by 3.5 percent overall and 10 percent during city driving, according to Ford.

The automaker also estimates that drivers who spring for a Fusion with the stop-start system "will save about $1,100 more than other midsize sedan owners during five years of driving."

The stop-start system will only be available with the Fusion's 1.6-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine; the entry-level 2.5-liter four and top-spec 2.0-liter EcoBoost mill will do without the fuel-saving option.

The 2013 Fusion will be the first U.S.-market non-hybrid midsize sedan to offer stop-start technology.
