Chrysler has been good enough to put together a clip capturing its preparations for returning the SRT Viper GTS-R to the track for the American Le Mans Series (ALMS).

The video shows the car head of its race livery being applied, as the mechanics, engineers and drivers get the car prepped for its race return. The competition-spec 2013 Viper will compete this year as part of a two-car team in the ALMS, the same series that Viper took out in 2000.

"We stopped racing Viper as an official factory program after the 2000 season," said Gary Johnson, Road Racing Manager for Dodge Motorsports. "Ever since then, Viper enthusiasts have asked us when we will race again. We had no answer until now."

The chassis is the same in the GTS-R and the road-going Viper, in compliance with ALMS rules. The wheelbase of the GTS-R remains 99 inches as is it on the street-legal version of the Viper, while the engine size has been reduced on the racing going version to 8 liters by changing bore and stroke. The governing bodies permitted the team to enter the 8 liter car in the 5.5 liter competition, but required a restrictor to be placed on the engine's intake tract.

The engine will run on E-85, while the Xtrac transmission has been moved to the rear of the snake. The dry weight has been reduced to 2740 lbs. Although the factory worked hard to retain as much of the street look of the Viper, they have added carbon fiber composite materials to the bodywork with aerodynamic changes including lowered body sides and a front splitter and rear airfoil being incorporated.

The 2013 SRT Viper GTS-R will return to the track on August 4 at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.
