Pininfarina wants to be all-electric luxury automaker

The design house plans three crossovers and a halo supercar.

It seems that every other month a new supercar maker sprouts up. Another company will soon join their ranks, but this time it's a familiar name in the automotive world — Pininfarina.

According to Autocar, the renowned Italian design house announced at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this month that they will transition from being a styling consultancy to a full-fledged automaker. Not only that, but Pininfarina intends to become an all-electric luxury brand.

Pininfarina will start with four models in their first five years. Its main products will be three electric crossover models, poised to compete in the same segments as the Porsche Macan, Cayenne, and Lamborghini Urus. A flagship sports car will take on the Bugatti Chiron.

Pininfarina was founded in 1930, and has penned some of the most iconic cars in automotive history, for automakers such as Cadillac, Maserati and, most notably, Ferrari. In 2015, Indian automaker Mahindra purchased a majority stake in Pininfarina.

Autocar goes on to say The supercar will share a platform with a car by Croatian electric car manufacturer Rimac and technology with Mahindra's Formula E program. The article says Mahindra will put $500 million towards the venture, with the first cars to be revealed in 2020.
