FCA recalls 240,000 Jeep Liberty SUVs to replace control arms

Water can accumulate inside the rear lower control arms, accelerating corrosion and eventual failure.

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has issued a recall for nearly 240,000 older-model Jeep Liberty SUVs to address a corrosion problem.

The 2004-2007 Liberty employs a rear lower control arm that is prone to failure, potentially causing the vehicle to lose control if the component breaks while underway.

Water apparently collects inside the arm, accelerating corrosion. The issue was initially handled via a regional "salt belt" campaign. The company later identified more than 150 incidents from vehicles excluded from the original campaign, however.

"FCA US is aware of a single potentially related accident, but no related injuries," the company says.

Affected vehicles will receive new lower control arms, with replacement parts expected to be available starting next month.
