Feds investigate Isuzu Rodeo dropping gas tanks

Dozens of owners report corrosion failure of fuel tank shield or mounts, allowing the tank to detach from the vehicle.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched an investigation into reports of fuel tank detachment with older Isuzu Rodeo, Axiom and Honda Passport vehicles.

The agency received a petition related to a 2004 Rodeo that had experienced partial fuel tank separation, with the tank dropping 5-6 inches.

More than two dozen complaints have been identified, including three reports of tank detachment and 23 others related to tank retention integrity that do not involve detachment from the vehicle.

The agency is now moving forward with a preliminary investigation to determine if a deeper analysis is warranted.
