Tesla Model S catches fire 'out of the blue'

The Model S was driven by actress Mary McCormack\'s husband, British TV director Michael Morris.

A Tesla Model S has unexpectedly caught fire in California last week, prompting an investigation by the automaker.

The destroyed Model S was being driven by British TV director Michael Morris on Santa Monica Blvd when it mysteriously ignited, according to Morris' wife, actress Mary McCormack.

"No accident, out of the blue," McCormack wrote on Twitter. "Thank you to the kind couple who flagged him down and told him to pull over."

Tesla has promised to investigate the fire, which it describes as an "extraordinarily unusual occurrence."

Aside from crashes, previous battery fires have been tied to damage from items on the road or loose electrical connections related to a production error.

@Tesla This is what happened to my husband and his car today. No accident, out of the blue, in traffic on Santa Monica Blvd. Thank you to the kind couple who flagged him down and told him to pull over. And thank god my three little girls weren't in the car with him pic.twitter.com/O4tPs5ftVo
