The concept is shown flying at Mach 5 at an altitude of around 95,000 feet.
Boeing has revealed a conceptual sketch for a hypersonic passenger plane capable of traveling at speeds of up to Mach 5.
Highlighted 15 years after the iconic Concorde made its final supersonic passenger flight, Boeing's concept aims to fly much faster with a theoretical trip from New York to Tokyo in just two hours.
"Boeing is building upon a foundation of six decades of work designing, developing and flying experimental hypersonic vehicles, which makes us the right company to lead the effort in bringing this technology to market in the future," says Boeing's chief scientist of hypersonics, Kevin Bowcutt.
The aircraft would use a traditional turbofan engine to take off and reach a certain speed where the intake air is routed to an afterburner ramjet capable of hypersonic flight. It will only be able to reach Mach 5 in the thin air of extremely high altitude around 95,000 feet, where passengers will be able to see the curvature of the earth.
The company still has many engineering challenges to work through, expecting the first flight to be at least 20-30 years into the future.
