3M planning to acquire Meguiar’s

09/11/2008, 9:47 AM

By Andrew Ganz

Conglomerate 3M announced yesterday its intention to acquire Meguiar’s, Inc., the more than 100-year-old family-run car care products business. Meguiar’s, which is based in Southern California, is notable for current president and CEO Barry Meguiar, who is a regular at vintage and new car show events across the world.

In a statement, 3M’s vice president of the company’s Automotive Aftermarket Division, Ian Hardgrove, implied that the colorful Barry Meguiar would continue to be part of the company.

Meguiar’s has become a staple of the car show scene and the company says it sponsors more than 10,000 car shows across the world despite being a small family-run business with 115 employees.

Hmm, I wonder this is sitting with Barry Meguiar? A family owned business for over 100 years and now it could be taken over by 3M, what’s the interest? For a public owned company they sure are small, with only 115 employees.

Isn’t Barry Meguiar like this throaty folk singer guy who released the hit single, “Eve of Destruction”?

3M and Meguires both make some of the best products in their respective arenas, but it still doesnt seem right to see an American classic of a company go to a giant. The Clay bar rules!

“Eve of Destruction” was by Barry McGuire (different spelling!)

A lot of auto body shops use M3 products, paint rubbing compounds, wet sanding sprays, and tape, I hope they keep not of the Meguiar’s products and most of all the employee’s.
