4.4L diesel-powered Ford Expedition [Spied]

It appears to be ‘diesel test day’ at Ford as spy photographers have spotted a 4.4L diesel-powered Ford Expedition while out testing. Photographers spotted a 4.4L diesel-powered F-150 earlier today, and this Expedition mule is sporting the same dual exhaust setup.


As with the F-150, the new diesel mill is intended to replace Ford’s current 5.4L gasoline Triton V8 engine and, despite being a diesel, will offer similar performance to the Triton powerplant — thanks to 340 horsepower and 430 lb-ft or torque. But even with all that power on tap, the 4.4L diesel unit will actually improve fuel-economy by about 20 percent.

To meet stricter diesel regulations, the new diesel will utilize a separate urea system to clean up NOx emissions. The system will inject a liquid urea solution into the exhaust stream in order to reduce emissions. The system requires a separate tank of urea, which will be refilled during routine oil changes.

Perhaps the most surprising part of the new engine is its intended applications. By the 2010 model year, the new mill will find its way under the hood of the F-Series SuperDuty trucks, E-Series van as well as the Lincoln Navigator.

Okay so how much better is the F/econ?
How much will it cost (including Urea refills)?
Will it burn Bio-Diesel?
Any further plans to but diesel in cars?. A killer Mustang Diesel would be a hoot.

I was just about to post that I want this motor in a Mustang! You must have been reading my mind.

And while we’re at it, Ford really needs a car to compete with the Vette. Bring us a REAL Thunderbird, preferably one with a mid-engine layout making about 400 ponies standard and an SVT version with about 600 ponies. I know the GT basically met these criteria, but it was an all-out supercar. A T-Bird with the same basic weight, build quality and manufacturing costs as a Vette should be more than doable. Give this to use with a dual-clutch system and I’d start saving my pennies today. Think a Ford NSX circa 1990.

And Blakkarr is right as well. If the spy photographers are within hearing distance of the test mule, the Diesel’s unique sound will give it away.

Those Ford exhaust tips with the rectangular cutouts/holes near the end have only been used on their Super Duty diesel vehicles. I’m sure the spy photographers have heard it running when they took the picture too.

I’m pretty sure the 6.8L Navistar won’t fit under the hood of the F-150 or Expedition. The Super Duty has a taller hood.

Whatever the case it sounds like this is getting very close to production ready. You have to wonder how long it will be before we hear GM and Chrysler are going to follow suit. A mini Duramax and Cummins can’t be far behind.

It’ll be interesting to see how the market receives it if the Dodge, GM, and Toyota mills all offer more torque.
Having sold a few trucks in my day, diesel buyers are looking at the torque number, unlike normal car/truck buyers.
The GM right now has over 500 lb.ft.
The Toyota almost 480.

The Navistar “Powerstroke” diesel is 6.4L, the V10 gas engine is 6.8L. The holes at the ends of the exhaust tips are diesel only, used to draw cooler air in to lower exhaust temps at the ends so you don’t melt bumpers on cars parked nearby.

Don’t worry DRFull-OS The Ford will have more Torque and get better fuel economy than the competition mills EASILY with EcoBoost to be sure. :)
Arbiter yes we all saw the video on the Fire-breathing Powerstroke that could have cooked a weeny if you were standing at the south end of the F-250. So it indeed is a good move on Ford’s part that it will be designing future diesel powerplants in house for now and the foreseeable future. Don’t send a boy to do a man’s job :). Besides that is a huge waste of second energy that Twin Force could have been using instead of cooking weenies at the end of a stick or just going up in smoke!

20% better mileage… but 25% more cost at the pump… you are still losing money.

Time to ditch the truck and buy a civic.

New Civic: $22,000, or $4,400 per year over five years.
20,000 miles @ 15 mpg (Gasoline) = 1,333.33 gallons * 3.50 = $4666.66
20,000 miles @ 30 mpg (Gasoline) = 666.67 gallons * 3.50 = $2333.35

So, you already own a truck that gets 15 mpg at $3.50, with an operating cost of $4666.66 per year. You buy a Civic and replace the commuting miles driven in the truck. The Civic costs $4,400 per year to buy, and an addition $2,333.35 to operate, for a total of $6733.35. The truck has a net benefit of $2066.69 over buying a Civic to replace the commute in the existing truck. Truck wins!

Now, let’s look at Gas truck versus Diesel truck:
20,000 @ 15 mpg (Gas) = 1,333.33 * $3.50 = $4666.66
20,000 @ 18 mpg (Diesel) = 1,111.11 & $4.00 = $4444.44

Diesel has an advantage of $222.22 over gasoline, year over year.

Assuming the Diesel costs $5,000 more, over 5 years the diesel would only save just over $1000 in fuel costs, thus having a $4,000 deficit in cost of ownership over the Gasoline truck. Once again, Gasoline truck wins. If the cost of the diesel is only $1000 more than the gasoline truck then it’s a tie. The ace in the hole for diesel is bio-diesel which is much less expensive than petroleum diesel, but much harder to find. The offset in food costs would probably negate any price benefits of using bio-diesel, which kills that idea as well.

There’s a reason why Gasoline has been the economic powerhouse in the automotive industry for a century: economics.

Where does FordTaurusHumper keep pulling these fanciful power figures from?? Because by all accounts, any word on Ford’s Twinforce roadmap fails to mention such astonishing numbers.

By the look of things, Ford hopes to churn out a 2.5L TF 4-pot good for about 260HP, the much touted 3.5L V6 (that we’re already beginning to see) that will put out anywhere from 350-420hp, a possible 5.0L V8 making around 400 horses, and a possible 6.2L super-duty V8 which could make as much as 650lb-ft of torque.

Even for a troll… he’s not very good at trolling…
