Spied: 2009 45th Anniversary Ford Mustang V6 Performance Package

06/06/2008, 12:03 PM

By Nick Aziz

Following on the heels of spy shots of the 2009 45th Anniversary Mustang GT, our spy photographers have spotted the 45th Anniversary edition of the sportier, V6 Performance Package car. The 2009 model will have a few special features to set it apart from its brethren — most notable is a glass roof.

The Performance Package model should see at least a few changes for the 2009 model, including a new racing stripe package and possibly a larger hood scoop (although it’s difficult to tell from the pictures), updated wheels and a revised front fascia. It also appears the car’s grille will have a few less horizontal slats.

Ford recently previewed the car by releasing photos of the special ‘45th Anniversary’ badge that adorns the ‘Stang. It is expected to arrive at dealerships in the next two months.

It’s not known if the car will feature any special interior treatments.

God I’m soooooooooooooo tired of the over-rated, girly looking, I wish I was a real musclecar, overproduced mustang. If you were going to go retro with this car, how come they never thought of a Mach 1 version for THIS body style but put it on the 02’s and 03’s? Retards. At least it’s American (for all you import humpers out there, you know who you are)

I swear the Mustang has more “special editions” than any car I’ve ever seen. Ofcourse I guess b/c they are “tiajuana taxis” around here you need something to tell yours apart from the rest of them.

The glass roof does look nice… but I’m not digging the fake hood scoop at all… it’s way too small for that giant hood.

I hear you guys, but I have a fundamental beef with Chrysler for producing the Challenger, which was considered the ‘girl’ version of the HemiCuda we so dearly loved. (yeah, I’m that old) The Cuda just had the look that said ‘fast’ while the Challengers had the look that said ‘318′. I had a Coronet RT with a 440 sixpack, and still grin when I think about the drives home from work and cruising at night. Always envied the guys with the Cudas.. The ‘69 Boss Mustang was equally beautiful. That’s the one to retro. Also the ‘69 Z28 Camaro.

Well the Bullitt Mustaing is kind of nice. But the special wheels, special shifter, retrol color and grill treatment do not justify the price premium.

How many years have we been talking about the death of “X” domestic car company?? The Mustang is looking old, but it’s about to have a redesigned model out. What do you want them to do? Drop the Mustang for almost 10 years like GM did with the Camaro/Firebird?? I’d rather have a choice of dozens of Mustangs than no Mustang at all…

having a choice of mustangs is ok, but don’t SATURATE the public with all kinds of special editions that make close to no sense what so ever, you should atleast have a base,GT, something above the GT and then a REAL special edition in limited numbers, but no- from the Shelby, Shelby GT500, Shelby GT500KR, Bullitt, CS-GT, Anniversary, and lets not forget those others, Roush- Foose- Saleen , granted SOME ’stangs are good but ease up on the choices…..

The Mustang IS a girl car, period. I see more 07-and-up Mustangs every day than I can count, for some reason they are as thick as flies around here, and every one of them — GTs and all — have some blonde bimbo or grey-haired old lady behind the wheel. When they start making Mustangs with factory colors in powder blue, lipstick red and apple green, Ford is pretty much admitting that they’ve got a chick car on their hands.

@ 02WRXPSM
One of the main reason the Mustang is still around is the fact that it can be sold to a women. The Mustang never touted itself as a “mans” car. They offer it with a v-6 and basic trim for a reason. If every Mustang was sold with a 500hp V-8 and only a manual transmission. The Mustang would have died decades ago.

The Mustang is what it is, an inexpensive sports car that can get you from a-b and have fun doing it. Not everyone wants to drive a SMALL Turbo 4cyl rally car.

I apologize for calling you a dumbass, I hadn’t had my caffeine yet today — my bad. I did not offer my 02 WRX as an alternative to the Mustang; far from it — it is an acquired taste, and to be honest it would make me pretty sad to see Imprezas in place of all those Mustangs on the road, because there’s some value in being rare and unique. But to say the Mustang isn’t a “man’s car” is to risk getting beat down in the parking lot after a NASCAR race. I love how they keep the cute little fake hood scoop, even in the GT versions.

Only 2 Detroit models have survived since the 60s without a name change or a missing production gap: the Mustang and the Vette (if you discount that goofy ‘83-’84 thing). Both cars still enjoy tremendous popularity because of that. Those of you who think the ‘Stang is a chick car need to grow a pair yourself. It’s just a popular car. Period. And no, not the one that involves a string at the end.

06/06, 12:52 PM

No way that’s a Shelby.

This car has the same front fascia as a standard V6 Mustang, just with a billet grille from what looks to be JC Whitney.

Seeing what Ford did with the 35th and 40th anniversary Mustangs, all cars will have the 45th anniversary badging, from V6 autos to the GT500.

Yawn.

LLN is getting closer. It’s not a “Performance Package”, only appearance. The whole paragraph starting with “The Performance Package model should see at least a few changes…” should be deleted.

The APPEARANCE Package does NOT get new racing stripes, it does NOT get a larger hood scoop, it does NOT get revised wheels, it does NOT get a revised front fascia, and the grille is exactly the same as last year’s.

Journalism is dead.

As noted with pretty much every other comment, the mustang has more variations than any other car I can think of. It should be it’s own sub brand, you’ve got ford, mercury, lincoln, and mustang. Unreal, and I swear of a years worth of MotorTrends, about 8 issues have some “new” mustang on the front. Give it a rest.

The thought is if they had a desirable product from the getgo they wouldn’t need to make 400 variations of it. Unfortunately, it’s chassis is it’s weak link. Consider that a base vette outperforms a Mustang GT500 in every category.

What kind of bizarre fantasy land do you people live in, that you think you’ll get laid because of a rumbly exhaust or a plastic hood scoop? That may have happened in a Foreigner song, but I got news for you, the only girls turned on by that come with a price tag and leave you with an STD. Just idiotic. Almost as stupid as claims that this (or the last two) generations of Mustangs have anything to do with performance. I can’t tell you how many Mustang-driving neanderthal morons I have DESTROYED in my near-to-stock WRX. I’ll spot you 200hp if you agree to a section of road that has two or three turns in it — bye! Just last week some tool in a Mustang tried to follow me through a freeway interchange and almost got it sideways; I came out about ten car lengths ahead and he stayed behind me and tried to play it off for the next six miles. My co-worker has one of the limited-edition BOSS Mustangs, essentially a GT with yellow paint and lowering springs. The springs are so stiff and the chin spoiler so low that it rattles when he drives and actually shatters the glass in the fog lights (he’s on his third pair.) I sat him in my co-driver seat and took him through an empty parking lot at 70mph around the cement-base light posts. He won’t let me near his Mustang, he knows it wouldn’t survive! As for the Mustang being an American car, I’d bet 20% of that car is sourced in the US and the rest is made and built overseas and in Mexico — it better be, it looks so cheaply put together. As common as Civics and half as durable.

@Rafa LL: The Warrior Edition and the Pink Edition are the same car.

@02WRXPSM: We don’t drive these cars for women. We drive them because we love them. Again, I’ll put my Mustang against your Scooby any day of the week, on any course.

Denton, I’ve been up against 400hp cars before, and won easily. Horsepower is about 1/4th of the equation. Handling, weight and traction matter. Sure, I might have trouble in a straight drag race, but dragging is racing for people with no attention span. I’m about 110 hp over stock, but I’m also 3190lbs, AWD and set up in the suspension department. I eat Boxters and Audis for lunch, and I spent about $26k total. If I spent as much as it cost to get a Shelby GT500, I’d be well over that HP mark and still have better traction, cornering and weight/power ratio. The Mustang is a nice car to ride around in, but acting like it is some kind of performance benchmark is foolhardy. I can think of dozens and dozens of other cars besides a WRX/STI that could also easily put one in its place, and outlast it for 100k miles as well.

I’ll be honest in saying that I really don’t care for Mustangs. I also work and go to school in Dearborn, a.k.a “Ford Country” so I see soo many Mustangs in one day it’s not even funny. However what I like about the Mustang is the level of performance you get for the price. You basically can’t get a 2+2 seater, RWD 300hp V8 sports car brand new for 25k from any other auto maker. However the Mustang desperately needs to be updated, the solid rear axle needs to go, and desperately needs an IRS, and that iron block 4.6L V8 needs to go and switching to an aluminum block would help lighten and balance the Mustang.

The only problem I really had and I posted with my 35th comment about using all the fake hood scoops, with the V6 Mustang. Sorry when a Cobalt SS is faster than a V6 Mustang, then you know the V6 isn’t fast.

As for all the editions of the Mustang as long as they are performance oriented then I have no problem with it. How many Shelby GT*** Mustangs do you see? Or Roush Mustangs? Or Saleen Mustangs? Steeda? Parnelli Mustangs? As far as looks go I really like the new Bullit Mustang, and if Ford was to bring back the 5.0 engine, it would be pretty sweet to see a Boss 302, or to offer a Mach 1 again in the future.

Unfortunately as I mentioned with the current Mustangs suspension and weight is where it lacks. And I agree with Hateful83’s comment about a base Corvette outperforming a Shelby GT500.
