Volvo's powerful S60 Polestar Concept unveiled last month was believed to be a one-off model, but a new rumor suggests this BMW M3-fighter could be headed to production sooner rather than later.

The Swedish automaker's U.K.-market managing director, Nick Connor, told Autocar that it is "in serious discussion with Polestar to try and make the S60 [Polestar] a reality."

Although a production S60 Polestar's price tag would undoubtedly be well under the $300,000 the concept car realized in a recent sale to an undisclosed buyer, Autocar states that the price will still exceed £100,000 ($155,500).

It's not difficult to speculate that such a high price would make a mass production S60 Polestar a tough sale against far less expensive, more established rivals, although its 508 horsepower and sophisticated all-wheel-drive system do make a technical case for themselves.

The magazine says that production would be limited and that the automaker would consider such a vehicle a "marketing exercise." Volvo's lineup doesn't really have a halo car in it.

As for Polestar's long-rumored return to European touring car racing, Connor wasn't quite as bullish.

"We haven't ruled it out, but there are no immediate plans," he said.
