I really loath the design of the fj cruiser...
It looks like any car a child can build with legos

if toyota tones down the massive blind spots in the back, the tacky plastic fooring and shave the light covers to fit the cars look, and rip the ugly plastic bumpers off maybe and just maybe it would look better

The "American Car Industry" destroyed itself 25 years ago when it failed to adapt quickly enough to market forces (Oil Prices) and the changing aesthetic desires of the Market. Ford, GM, Chrysler and AMC were all making big ugly cars that got 10 MPG or less. There were some good looking cars, but our collective hindsight is not 20/20. Anyone remember the AMC Hornet, Pacer, Chrysler K-Car, Chevy Chevette, Cadilac Cimarron...i could go on. The corporate leaders of these giant corporations made some astonishingly bad decisions. The Big Lie of the American Car Industry is that someday, someway gas will cost 25 cents a gallon again and 10 MPG will be acceptable because environmental damage is all some left wing cabal to perform ritual castration on the american man. Truth is we cut our own schwantz off. If the American Computer Industry had the same sense as the American Car Industry, we would all still use Commodore 64's. Get over it.

I have an Fj cruiser and it is great. The hummer H3 has 20 less horse power, uses more fuel and is much slower, and the Fj has four doors by the way. The Fj cruiser is fast brother try 0 to 60 mph in a mere 7.1 seconds ,it would leave any hummer eating dust on or off road. Oh and by the way the hummer is basically a copy of a 1960 landcruiser concept vehicle. Toyota has made the Fj since the 1960's and that's long before GM made the hummer. Oh, that must of hurt.

I have a FJ Cruiser and I really like it, so far no com[plaints. I received a postcard in the mail July 3rd saying to take my truck into the dealer for the tire safety inspection. I did that afternoon before the 4th 0f july and so problem was found. It's all GOOD!

""Toyota discovered the problem through its own quality-control process, and no injuries or defects have been reported by owners. Toyota outsources tire mounting for the FJ to another company."

I don't know what to add to that."

Not attacking you bloodwyn, but I do:) Toyota should do anything in its power to cling on to that reliability image of theirs. If they don't they're screwed because they build gutless, uninspired reliablility records on wheels. It's not necessarily a bad thing to say, because showing no courage in design whatsoever means that you can't go wrong with it.

A bit of news for those who think Toyota is destroying the American auto industry: Toyota IS the American auto industry. The Avalon, Camry, Corolla, Matrix, Sequoia, Sienna, Solara, Tacoma, and Tundra are all built in the U.S. by American workers with American managers. That's 9 out of the 16 vehicle models they sell.

Compare this to Chevrolet: The Avalanche and HHR are built in Mexico, the Aveo is built in South Korea, and the Equinox, Impala, and Monte Carlo are built in Canada. That leaves... guess what? 9 out of 15 models that are built in the United States.

It's time for people to accept that all automakers are global corporations and stop selling themselves short with a blind loyalty to historically American brand names.

Amen to Josh. The import auto industry is destroying american industry because this country has made it so much more affordable for them to produce their cars here, while the american companies are suffering because it's so expensive to build their cars in their own country.

Laws have changed here in the last 3 years. If a company knows there could be a safety problem they have to report it right away. If not HUGE fines. That is why there is a sudden uptick in recalls at some companies the last two years. Once management is made aware it must be reported within something like 36 hours.

Well my opinion if it matters is this.... TOyota had a recall and recalled their vehicles. Good. GM has a recall and recalled their vehicles good. Cars are MACHINES BUILT BY PEOPLE! SOmetimes they will have problems, sometimes not! It cracks me up how many people wil defend one company about a recall and then turn and tear into another company. I agree with those of you who say, it is how they HANDLE the recall.... My Ford I had, the dealership would tell me I would not have to have my recalled item fixed since it was not broken....WHAT??? So then the whole time I drove and something went wrong, made a noise or whatever, I freaked out thinking oh there goes that part....if the Ford dealer would have just fixed it, I would not feel that way, needless to say I will not buy another Ford, because of HOW IT WAS HANDLED! Now I have a MINI and any little thing, anything that I have had a concern with has been fixed, no questions....and I fel alot better about my car. So as for this recall, it is just that, a recall, how it is handled by the dealership will give the reputation as to if it is a good recall or a sour one....

I've said it before.. Its not the number of vehicles recalled or the number of recalls issued. The important part is how the recall is handled. You know, did they wait till people were hurt or died before making the recall? Did they let the problem slide until consumer uproar was making the press? Not here, not in this instance.

I know there are people foaming at the mouth to deride Toyota over a recall, any recall, but this ain't the one.

The Hummer H3, which has 4 doors, is rated at 16 city/19 highway.
The Toyota FJ Cruiser, a 2 door, is rated at 17 city/21 highway.

Not a huge difference, especially considering the H3 is bigger. Get your facts straight.

The gas mileage is what hurts here. better than a Hummer no doubt, but still costly. A diesel would be a very smart option.

the tires were NOT the problem
It was the tire assembly that is outsourced. basically they have someone else mount the tires to the wheel and the assembled wheel/tire combo is then bolted on at final assembly. the guys mounting tire to wheel messed up. The tires ARE FINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not only that, but what's so terrible about a recall if nobody has been killed in either way? At least they aren't showing negligence. They're taking care of the situation before it becomes a serious problem.

This is a excerpt from Daniel Howes column from the Detroit News published yesterday.....

"Which global automaker recalled twice as many vehicles in 2005 as the year before, according to data from R.L. Polk & Co. and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and compiled by Forbes magazine? Toyota -- not GM.

Which global automaker recalled 10.1 percent of its vehicles in operation last year, second only to Ford Motor Co.'s 11.7 percent? Toyota -- not GM at 6.8 percent."

Well, at least thy are admitting the problem. A "secret campaign" would be a bit deceitful... This sounds more like a tire issue than a Toyota issue though...
