The promised Mercedes-Benz SLC that was expected to come out within three years and compete with Porsche's iconic 911 was put on ice. The company's Board of Directors executives are citing high costs as the reason for the hold.

The car is not entirely out of the question, though engineers will need to change it to cost significantly less money before it gets the go-ahead, BenzBoost reported.

The so-called baby SLS promised to be more hard-edge sports car than the boulevard cruiser and grand tourer that the SL is. The car's high costs are no doubt related to the fact that it's based on a shortened version of the gullwing-doored SLS coupe. Both AMG and Mercedes will engineer the car.

Early reports had the car weighing about 3,700lbs, with sources divided on the powerplant. Some indicated the existing 6.2-liter V8 will be used, while others suggested a smaller V6, likely turbocharged, and a third option of a twin-turbo V8 was also mentioned.

The rumored pricing was about $120,000.
