Dodge Challenger Concept

01/07/2006, 1:32 PM

By admin

After numerous rumors and leaks, DaimlerChrysler today officially announced the new 2007/2008/2009 Dodge Challenger Concept, on display this week at the Detroit auto show. The car features a 425 horsepower 6.1L Hemi, capable of propelling the car to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds, and through the quarter mile in 13. Top speed is 174 mph. “Challenger draws upon the initial 1970 model as the icon of the series,” said Tom Tremont, Vice-President of Advanced Vehicle Design at Dodge. “The 1970 model is the most sought after by collectors. But instead of merely recreating that car, the designers endeavored to build a Challenger most people see in their mind’s eye-a vehicle without the imperfections like the old car’s tucked-under wheels, long front overhang and imperfect fits,” he said. “As with all pleasurable memories, you remember the good and screen out the bad.”

“We wanted the concept car to evoke all those sweet memories,” Tremont said.

Getting the right proportions was critical, according to Micheal Castiglione, principal exterior designer. The Challenger concept sits on a 116-inch wheelbase, 6-inches longer than the original. But its width is 2-inches greater, giving the car a more aggressive stance. Thanks to its increased cabin length, the new Challenger is a true four-seater with plenty of rear room, according to the carmaker.

“We wanted to stay pure,” said Castiglione, “with simple, minimal line work, but with everything just right.”

The five-spoke chrome wheels — 20-inch in the front and 21-inch in the rear — are set flush with the bodyside, giving the car a muscular stance. The signature side view “thrust” accent line is higher up on the body, running horizontal through the fender and door and kicking up just forward of the rear wheel.

Bumpers are smooth, body-color, and flush with the body. “This is something we would have loved to do on the original Challenger,” said Jeff Godshall, “but the technology just wasn’t there.” With the Challenger concept, however, the Pacifica Studio designers were able to realize “what we wanted in our perfect world.”

All glass is set flush with the body without moldings, another touch the original designers could only wish for. The car also has no B-pillar.

Although the flat seats of the original Challenger didn’t offer much support for aggressive cornering, the front seats in the Challenger concept car boast hefty bolsters much like those found on Dodge’s famed SRT series cars.

With its thick, easy-grip rim, circular hub and pierced silver spokes, the leather-wrapped steering wheel evokes the original car’s “Tuff” wheel, as does the steering column “ribbing.” The floor console, its center surface tipped toward the driver, is fitted with a proper “pistol grip” shifter shaped just right to master the quick, crisp shifts possible with the six-speed manual “tranny.”

“We designed the in-your-face gauge holes to appear as if you are looking down into the engine cylinders with the head off,” relates Barrington. These are flanked outboard by a larger circular “gauge” that is actually a computer, allowing the driver to determine top overall speed, quarter-mile time and speed, and top speed for each of the gears.

The hood reprises the original Challenger “performance hood” and its twin diagonal scoops, now with functional butterfly-valve intakes. Designed to showcase the modern techniques used in fabricating the car, what look like painted racing stripes are actually the exposed carbon fiber of the hood material.

I bought a 1970 Challenger in 1969. Plum Crazy! Black roof and interior. The car was a beauty but also a lemon. I guess that happens to first runs but I was sooo disappointed with it. I owned it for four months and it was in the dealer’s service shop for three. They finally told me to pick out any car on the lot for a swap and I took a SuperBee…4-speed..positraction..8-track player..woodgrain dash..very nice car. I kept it for years and gave it to my brother.

To keep a short story long, my son sent me the email attachment about the new Challenger Concept and I absolutely love it!! I just hope I can afford it when its in production because I really loved the original when it was running. Thanks for reading my thoughts.

Respectfully,

I would also like to see a stripped down hi-po version made available….no traction control, none of that stability program crap….sort of an base model with big HP.

As an ASE certified Master Auto tech, I can tell you with
authority and knowledge that though this (and other) Detroit cars are high-performance, that DOES NOT mean they suck gas like their 1970’s bretheren, as you yahoos
infer! With good driving habits and the current engine
technology such as Displacement-on-Demand, fuel consumption remains low for V8 engines in these applications, so if you don’t like the styling, okay, I can hang with that, but stop shooting your mouth off about fuel consumption when you obviously know nothing about it!!!

I haven’t bought a new car since the ‘87 Monte Carlo SS I had, and it got stolen because it was so gorgeous. If (when) this comes out, and sells like it will – maybe the auto makers will realize that people really appreciate and long for the comeback of these REAL, truly classic cars again.

Well what more can be said other than, Chrysler/Dodge has done what they are so good at once again, blown GM and Ford off the map with another automotive icon that will sell as good or if not better than their other cars have. The true muscle car aficiandos can identify with, understand and appreciate a car of this caliber. For all you nay sayers, get a life! you obviously don’t have a clue or have any kind of appreciation for classic cars and what they represent. The numbers don’t lie, Ford and GM suffered a total combined loss of 6.2 billion in the last 9 months deep in the red, are closing factories and laying off workers, while Chryslers sales are up 4% over last year, that’s on the positive side and in the black! I’m a true muscle car fan who owns a classic Mopar muscle car and I know that this new Challenger will have to be the next car that I buy.

I love it! The new Challenger has outstyled the new Mustang and looks better than the new Camaro. The only thing that needs to be changed is the instrument cluster on the dashboard–it needs to be bigger so that it’s easier to read. With 425 Horses and a stunning look, I think I might be switching back to Daimler-Chrysler. I hope the Challenger is put into production and that the exterior looks exactly like the concept. I would have returned to Daimler Chrysler sooner had they kept the original concept design for the Charger. I hope they don’t get stupid by making the Challenger look big and bulky like the Charger. It’s good to see the Big Three fighting to see who can produce the best American Muscle Car. MAC

The technical features are great but the 70 looked a lot better. They shouldn’t have messed with the lines – they were perfect. Raising the side line was a huge mistake – it doesn’t have that “look” now. Any purist who owned a 70 knows what I mean. There’s a reason why the 70 is the most sought after challenger….. I will say that the 70 did not handle like I know the new one will – but then a Ugo probably handles better than the 70 did. The 70 needed front end enhancements like rack & pininion steering, massive disc brakes, a fat steering wheel, better weight distribution, radial tires, wrap-around seats, and some no-rattle doors if you know what I mean, but otherwise the 70 was perfect and they should not mess with perfection. I think they’re blowing a great opportunity.

My friends and I set up 1970’s era muscle cars for road racing, and the stock Challengers and Cudas shortfall was handling. With their wider track, however, it took very little suspension work to make them a blast to throw into corners, and the end result was more predictable handling than the Mustangs, Camaros and (ugh) Javelins. The new Challenger increases the track and wheelbase, and has an obviously lower center of gravity and roll-center than the original. The pictures show the engine set much lower and further back in the engine bay as well. This is a ground-up design that surpasses the Charger’s reconfiguration from an Australian “saloon car” designed for a smaller engine. With two or three engine options from the Chrysler line-up, this new platform should privide a good combination of performance and reasonable fuel consumption rates. This particularly when coupled with the new line of overdrive transmissions which provide acceleration ratios with economy cruising.
P.S. Donna W. who drove a four speed Super Bee – You are a catch! My wife only drives a clutch, and she was harder to find than a 440-SixPack.

There needs to be more cars with those kinds of looks because now a days, the looks are so boring and they all look alike. For example the new GTO looks like a Grand Prix, but with more performance. To me they killed the GTO with those looks that it has now in no way does it relate to it’s past history just the name. All of these retro rides including the new Challenger display some of the most innovative designes and production features, it makes me wonder why these approches are not applied to all new vehichles built here in America. It’s sad to see Ford and GM produce all the import copy cars. I say let Japan, China and Korea build their own designs. Lucky for Chrysler fans our guys are building the best and most innovative automobiles on the American market. And in my view some of the most beautiful cars and trucks in the world.

I didn’t used to play the lotto, but I am about to start. I’ve got to have one of these, by any means necessary. As far as any soldier dying for me to have one…Well thats bull! It’s clear to me by reading some pryor comments, that most people don’t know what the war is about! Start using your commen sense and stop watching so much T.V. Make the car already!!!!!!

first let me say YES!!!!!!!! finally! i’ve read several of the listings above and its cool to read about all of you so excited about this car. Then i read the gas guzzler comments and think they’re missing the point. My father bought a 1970 challenger rt/se in 1970. In the beginning of my life it was the car he drove me and mom and my brother and sister around in. Eventually we got a more appropriate “family” car and te challenger went into storage. Through the years my dad and i went to car shows and worked on the car and dreamed about one day restoring it to its original beauty!! (the storage and years got the best of it) Unfortunately my father passed away several years ago due to cancer and we never got the opportunity to finish together. Now that im 32 years old i still dream about one day finishing the car for dad and taking it for drives w/ mom and now my family and to car shows. I see the new challenger and just imagine how my dad would react and what he would say ( i know im freakin out). I dont know if i’ll be able to afford one of these new beauties when they come out (since its hard scrapping up money to restore dads) but i know this, these cars wether its the challenger or camaro or charger or yes even the mustang are not about guzzeling gas, they’re about memories of the past. Wether its memories of being young and driving fast or being young and talking to your dad about “one day this car will be yours son” these cars represent something to all the people who love them and it has nothing to do with gas!

here’s to hoping to restore one or own one

I grew up in Detroit and in the muscle car scene at the tail end of the seventies, and anyone who was into cars always agreed that the challenger and sister car “cuda” really were top picks in performance and non-performance models. It is obvious that there popularity continued to grow long after production stopped as seen in the ridiculous prices seen at the Barret-Jackson auctions. What can be said for the new concept challenger, it`s great, will it be affordable, let`s hope so, affordability will definetly go a long way in the number of sales for this car, as there`s no doubt that all across the board of ages people are going to desire this car. It really is about time for this car, before the new mustang steals the complete show. Good job Daimler!

This car DEFINATELY succeeds as a retro Challenger and as a muscle car! I always felt the Challenger and Barracuda E-bodies were never given a chance when permanently axed mid way into the 1974 model year. Chrysler have not had a decent, affordable, rearwheel drive performance coupe in over 30 years!!! Three decades people!!!! Chrysler, if you don’t build and mass produced this new Challenger, it will be the most idiotic move you ever make and you’ll simply fade away as an ex-American car maker, to become a simple, but amusing little toy devision of Mercedes. The NeoHemi engine alone will not keep Chrysler alive for long, having some DESIREABLE car bodies to put it in will certainly help. Like NIKE says…DODGE, JUST DO IT!!

The pony car wars of the sixtys started with the introduction of the Mustang. It is only fitting that the Challenger be produced as a worthy alternative.

We had a 1973 340 cubic inch, automatic Challenger which we sold in 1990. My wife loved that car and can not wait until the Challenger concept car becomes a production model. Hopefully, this time around all the short comings of the original will be corrected (in particular the weight). We are hoping that the production model will have IRS, a six speed automatic, as well as aluminum V8 option besides the Hemi.

I think the Dodge Challenger would be a bigger hit with more horsepower and maybe a turbo options so it can dominate the streets like it did in 1970 yet still be streetable the car should be made on a limited production run or just have one body style and stick with it and not do subtle changes as dodge did in 72-74 that put the Dodge Challenger to an end.

Waa, waa, waa, tree huggers go home. My boy just got home from Iraq, second tour. I am sure that if he had the cash he would buy one and deliver it to my doorstep. He might leave most of the rubber on the road between Ga. and Ca. though. I have been a Ford hot rodder all of my driving life but as I have gotten older I have been turning to Dodge. I am still a huge Ford fan, I love the Shelbys and the Gt’s, there is not many a car that would compare to a 66 fairlane 427. But this is the most incredible car I have seen from Dodge since, well, ever. I would be in line for one if I could spare the cash, definately. 10mpg is no biggy to me, I drive a D350 with a 360 and a granny tranny so I am already used to it.

Hey all you tree hugers, YOU are the reason gas prices are so high. Your environmental lobbyists have prevented us from building any new nuclear power plants for decades, which would have saved massive amounts of oil from being used and would have been much cleaner for the environment as well. YOUR lobby has also prevented us from building any new refineries since 1975. So everytime one of our refineries which are running at 95% capacity goes down, prices go up as during Katrina. Also YOUR lobby has prevented opening up the ANWR because you say it would harm the wildlife. I have personally seen the elk and caribou laying under the existing Alaska pipelines for shade and rubbing up against them to scratch themselves, so it doesn’t bother them much. YOU have also kept us from drilling offshore to a large degree. You guys have some kind of guilt trip about being an American and you hate America because of it. Until you understand this you will never be able to think logically. You’ld be well advised not to talk about an issue when you don’t understand it.
I have a 1992 Corvette LT1 that gets 26 mpg, not exactly a gas guzzler, because of fuel injection and overdrive transmissions and newer technolgies. This new challenger won’t be a gas guzzler either because of new technology.
Also I would be willing to bet a lot of our soldiers that WE are PROUD of will be returning home from IRAQ and buying themselves a brand new Challenger, Mustang or Camaro.
One of the reasons people like us love cars like these is they represent a freer America before you people screwed our country up. There I’m done with my rant.
The new Challenger is WAY COOL, and I will be owning at least one.

I was dissappointed with the design of the new Charger, thought the new GTO was ridiculus, was lukewarm about the new Chevy Camero, absolutely love the new Ford Mustang, and I am estatic over the new Challenger! The Mustang and the Challenger both pay homage to their great ancestors in the 70’s-but I have to say the Challenger takes the lead in styling and offering of the HEMI.

My father owned a 1970 Plymouth Road Runner that was one of the fastest cars in our small town. I don’t remember the exact color, but it was that bright yellow-green color he jokingly refered to as “piss-complexed”. He loved that car. He sold it around the later 70’s and has been kicking his butt ever since.

The Challengers and the Road Runners were very similar, just different makes. Since Plymouth is now defunct, I think it would be awesome if Dodge would offer a “Road Runner” package for the Challenger, complete with the Dust-trail stripe with the cartoon Road Runner, pistol-grip shifter, and a “BEEP-BEEP” horn. This could even evolve, dare I say, to a Super Bird version of the Challenger!

Someone is doing some forward thinking in designing the new Challenger…it looks great, has the muscle, and was the talk of the 2006 show. It appears to be an outstanding design at the right time…we babyboomers really perked up when we first saw it. I still miss my 69 RoadRunner with that 383 4bbl 4spd white leather deep blue with chromes…but that new Challenger…what a car…if it is priced right…who knows, maybe this old timer will revisit his youth with a real muscle car…the new Challenger. Let’s hope when they release the new Challenger, they don’t make a 4 door or station wagon version! The classic styles were the best.

Like all of Daimler’s design’s their Challenger concept car is stubby in appearance, making the hood’s appearance shorter.

The one thing that I can say in it’s defense is that if you set the concept in a mall parking lot, most car enthusiasts should be able to make the Challenger connection.

Now you have to wonder if Daimler will pull the Bait & Switch routine again. Remember, they paraded the longer, sleeker 1999 Charger concept car around the auto show circuit, then instead built a stubby Checker Cab with a delivery van grill on it. Then, to try and compensate for the Ma & Pa Kettle design they dropped a Hemi in it and told us to take it or leave it. As for me, you’re not going to feed me SOS after I’ve been shown a steak.

Anyone with two eyes can see that the Yellow Cab Charger is an aerodynamic nightmare that makes the lines of the Intrepid look like a Lamborghini, in comparison. It’s no wonder that the Checker Cab Charger with the delivery truck grill is the red-headed step-child of Nascar.

Here Here to all in favor of this vehicle. It looks great. Yes we need convertibles,at least 3 more retro colors like Lime-Light,Toro-Red,and a Gunmetal Blue would make this look terrific. Yes to Hood Pins and Go Wings. Retro badging and matte black graphics of any kind would also make me horny baby. And above all, If Ford can remake the Bullitt Stang, then Dodge should make a Special Edition Vanishing Point Challenger that would be what the GNX was to the Grand National. The Big Bad Brother that is revered by all who know of him. But it should not be badged so. Just like the GNX, it should be discreet in its badging with only the colors of what is not Alpine White, is Black. And in closing, Yes , the nostalgia that this vehicle exudes is the stuff that keeps us “true” Americans together as our own families or many families around the world integrated as one that have the same interests that bind us together. Helping dad fix up the daily driver in the yard or restoring the old classic to putt around on sunny days with. Oh by the way, I know that some of you left-wingers out there drive SUV’s and or whatever else tickles your fancy to add to worldly dilemmas. Some of you right-wingers are also bias when it comes to things that feel good or are fun too. So all you tree huggers and bias tree hugging hippocrites out there who like to juxt your position when it is convenient for you to do so, GO VOTE FOR HILLARY!!!! She does what you do ALOT.

I just hope that if Dodge does carry through with production of the Challenger the don’t do what Ford did with their Mustang. Reducing the horsepower like the concept Mustang had done to it prior to production. It’s great to see an American automobile company build something that can compete with the import world instead of building the mousey little clone cars that have come out in recent years.

I’m only a 20 year old college student, and drive a crumby 95 camaro with a V6. I’m lucky to get 26 mpg and I assure you it dosnt have near 505 horsepower.

Point being, this car (yes, I LOVE it) isnt a gas guzzler. Alot of thought and technology goes into this kind of thing because they are aware of gas-price issues.

To everyone else posting, dont let these idjit sticks get to you, some people (almost always eviromentalists) just love to make issues out of nothing.

I would definitely give the Mopar power a second look, especially if they do build it within the next year or 2. I do like the looks of both the Camaro concept and the Challenger concept and hopefully they will both be produced, at a reasonable cost. Mustang, Camaro and Challenger, i smell a new generation of Muscle Car wars brewing !!!!!!!!!

-Running my new Challenger “Wide F #$%^&’n! Open” down the Dragstrip.
- The sound of my LOUD open 3.5 Inch exhaust Waking my neighbors and Shaking the pants off my competitors.
-Feeling the rush of power on my chest as I persuade through the gears to 174 mph.
-Waxing the beast on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
-Cruising the street, going to the cruise spot, and answering the questions and listening to people comment on it must be “Sweet” to own one.
-The worst feeling is waiting to get on a build list from Dodge.
-Nightmare: Seeing the car in a future Rap video on MTV.

Let us read from the top again, and smile @ the new memories to be made in America again.

Know what all the boys spent their “Hazardous Duty” pay on when they got home?… Mostly Mustangs, a few Jeeps, a couple BMW’s… a few of my boy’s even re-enlisted to go BACK as the pay is so lucrative. What about the Charger? You guys hit the nail squarely on the head and drove it clean though the board with the Challanger. The Challanger is retro done right. But how can you even think of calling a 4dr. a Charger. Retro is in, and since you blew the Mustang out of the barn and now Camaro is trying to figure out what it wants to do, its time to bring back a real Charger (2dr., open grill, strong rear fender decks, maybe counter sink the rear window, and you guys already know what to do with the motor). I’m suffering from a midlife crisis so lets get going.

Gone is the sleek look of the older models and in with CHUNKY BUTT.
Now Chrysler is bringing out the Challenger Concept.
Okay, so it’s Mercedes Benz – but it is ten times the styling attempt by GM. This car is sleek and incorporates as much technology as they can cram into it. note to Daimler Chrysler — BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME.
With cars the like of which they are building or planning too, it is no wonder that D-B is eating GM’s and Ford’s lunch.

I’m also an ultra-liberal, eviro-tree-hugging-earth-first, 40 something, hard working, tax paying guy, and while I agree that America should specialize in hybrids for the average Joe or Josephine, it’s probably good for the US to ALSO produce cars that some people (not all) will choose over the imports. If the imports still have the market because of reliability and fuel economy, let’s at least give them a run for their money on COOLNESS!!

I’m buying one and parking it RIGHT NEXT to my hybrid. Fuel economy during the week (think Planet first!), and hauling ass and having fun on the weekends.

Now if I can only find a way to convince my better half that this is a smart move, if for no other reason than it helps the US economy…

The positive reaction to this Challenger far, far outweighs any negative opinion, and even people that know nothing about the original car, love this new concept. I wasn’t around to buy one in 1970, and seeing how unaffordable vintage Challengers and ‘Cudas were becoming for the average guy, I was lately starting to feel that I had missed one of the great automotive experiences of all time. But suddenly a new hope blossomed!!! Passing by a magazine stand, an amazing picture and the words “Dodge Challenger Returns” caught my eye. Wow! Suddenly things were looking up. I felt a sense of automotive optimism I hadn’t felt in a long time. Muscle cars, especially Mopars, now have an everlasting place in the American dream. And their magic has spread around the world. I dream of driving a new Dodge Challenger along an open road and off into the sunset. Please make my dream come true. (p.s. My wife says if it comes in Panther Pink, she wants one too.)

I can`t wait to see this baby in person. I was one of the very few girls in my town to have a muscle car in the 70`s. RS `70 Camaro split bumper-how many people remember those? This is an awesome looking ride! HURRY UP! This car needs to sit next to my `89 Vette and `50 Panhead. I REALLY want this car.

I think chickens are so overrated. I mean all they do is squawk until some section of your brain starts trying to detach itself from your skull. I tried to milk a chicken one once, you know. It wasn’t a very super experience, I’ll tell you that.
Though they taste alright–Except the feathers, those taste like cardboard with rotten pea soup broiled into it. Boy, I learned the wrong way how that tastes…
Well, as soon as I tell you my life story I’ll go to my room and notify myself of what a bad girl I am. (don’t ask how i got the name mr. if i’m a girl, it’s a very embarrasing story…)

I happened to catch a couple comments about our soldiers, and what’s happening to them in relation to gas prices? My question for you tree-hugging low-grade morons is when did you serve? By getting a car like this we are contributing to terrorism? Again yet another instance of an un-educated idiot. The majority of big media only lets you know what the have for a perspective, and a slanted one at that. This car is beautiful, plain and simple. And as for the Mustang comments, production – how many pony cars had freakin’ useless six cylinders for motors? And the new GT 500? How about the fact this car will pass your top-end in 5th gear? Don’t get me wrong, Ford did an exceptional job in it’s recreation of an automotive icon. To the point I almost thought of the ultimate sin, buying one. Four E-bodies in my history and to have one of these would almost be a dream come true. Don’t tease us Powers-that-Be at Chrysler.

Please figure out something , other than the 2006 GTO to combat these 6 cylinder Mustangs that I see everywhere, and have something ready for the Mopar boys. This car is nothing to snooze at like the Mustang. The Mopar guys are serious about the performance, not the “look”.

I owned a 1970 Challenger 383 Magnum SE (Special Edition) in red & white – very fast, good top end (140 stock) and great handling thanks to torsion bar front suspension.

I also used to own a ‘71 AMC Gremlin, and would love to see the new Challengers offer a hatchback with a fold-down rear seat. The pics shown here most closely resemble the ‘71 Challenger of ‘Cuda I believe.

A person would think they’d be able to offer a lighter curb weight – 2500 lbs or less. Actually, I’d like to see them take the new “Smart Car” that they got from Mercedes Benz, and make “IT” look like a Challenger – lower the top height, and put the “trunk” space all up front to preserve the look of a long hood, which would provide for a larger crumple zone too.

Great looking car. I think the hood should be reshaped a little so it does not cover the round headlights at the top and maybe a little better styled tail lights, but over all a great looking car. I also hope the Dodge dealers do not do what Ford dealers currently are doing with the 2007 GT500 Mustang Cobras, selling them to the highest bidder for $80,000 +. The MSRP for that stang is $41,000 and the dealers are selling them for 2-3 times over the MRSP. Ford should put a stop to this. I currently own a 1998 Mustang Cobra and I am disappointed in Ford not clamping down on the Ford dealers in ripping off the public. I am thinking when Dodge and GM puts out the Challenger and Camaro, the Ford GT Mustang Cobra will drop off in price (I hope). I will be keeping my eye on this car for 2008, would love to drive one!

I’m 17 and my frist car is a 1968 chevelle and I plan on getting a 1970 challenger after I finish this one…this new car seems nice but don’t call it a challenger, the only thing that resembles the challenger is the tailights and (although messed up completely) the body line…..if you like the way an old car looked, buy an old car and restore it..this snot-bubbled with wheels does not compare in any way to the classic muscle cars……

oh and for those saying that the gas guzzler is killing soldiers…how old are you?..some overwieght middle aged man? maybe….if you support them so much go join the war don’t complain that a car is killing them, it’s ignorant idiots like you…..

had a 1970 challenger, lost it in my divorce,(which was 7 years after they quit making them)(may her legs grow together). I started drooling when i heard and saw my musle machine might be comming back. i know for a fact if dodge would have started to build these a few years back (when ford started changing the mustang bodies and engines)there would not be as many mustangs on the road today. My wife now drives a 2005 mustang gt conv., and my father in law has a 1998 roush (with a kenny bell super charger),i will buy this challenger and put a few tricks under the hood, and i will be the one laughing at the finsh line. i just hope they decide to let us get the 6.6 hemi/6 speed tranny.

They have to offer it in alpine white! A vanishing point edition would be great marketing, not to mention awsome tv spots.
They could sweep the retro car market with this car ands hut down the mustang big time.

2008 Dodge Challenger

Late in the 2005 Calendar year blurry pictures began to surface of what many believed to be the next big thing from Daimler Chrysler Corporation. The muscular, bright orange car strongly resembled the e-body based Plymouth Barracuda and Dodge Challenger of the early 1970s, but with a sort of modernized feel. Rumors were rampant and in early January 2006 DCX made it official that the new Dodge Challenger Concept would be showcased at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, later that month. They made good on that promise as the centerpiece of Dodge’s huge section was a glowing beauty that was the new Challenger Concept.

While this picture may not accurately portray the massive crowds surrounding the car at almost all times during the public viewing days, many found it difficult to get near the new pony car concept while the Challenger made its week-long NAIAS debut. That same excitement was obvious in the press as just about every automotive media source, from internet blogs and forums to the big name motoring magazines worldwide featured the Challenger, even though little information was available at that time. The only real information numbers available were the very basics such as the specifications and estimated performance numbers.

Over the months following the debut of the Challenger, speculations of what ‘could be’ with the revamped classic were available all over the internet, and just as discussions began to die down, the Challenger popped up at a handful of car shows on the west coast, and then at a huge Mopar show at the Walter P Chrysler Museum.

Again, rumors flew over when the new car would be announced, as the public and the media alike were certain that this modern muscle car would find its way to the showroom floors of your neighborhood Dodge dealership. One of the most popular rumors, which may have been forgone since it made its way to the public well before its time, was that the Challenger would be debuted at the Woodward Dream Cruise in Metro Detroit, which is a massive rolling car show, but on June 30, 2006 newspapers hit the stand, from the Detroit Free Press to the Wall Street Journal; the Challenger was “a-go”, and it would be made official the following day at the Pepsi 400 NASCAR race at Daytona International Speedway. Mopar faithful and the performance world eagerly waited as there was a short presentation with NASCAR Legend Richard Petty, current NASCAR and Dodge Motorsports star Kasey Kahne, and Chrysler Group President and Chief Executive Officer Tom LaSorda, and with them was a 1970 Dodge Challenger T/A. Among the display there was a starting line-like setup, and with the throaty roar of the 6.1L Hemi engine, the Challenger Concept drove around from behind two large semi trailers and Mr. LaSorda waived a green flag, and made the move of the Dodge Challenger from Concept to a production vehicle official.

While full details are still somewhat sketchy, what we do know per Mr. LaSorda’s comments during and following the official announcement, is that the Challenger will be released as a 2008 model, and it should hit the showrooms early in the 2008 Calendar year. What we are yet to know for sure are things like what aspects of the Concept will be excluded from the production model, production numbers, and retail price. While it is assumed that the 6.1L Hemi engine and manual transmission displayed in the concept will make their way to production, it is unknown whether other engines will be offered. However, DCX’s new marketing campaign of “ask Dr. Z” in which questions pertaining to the corporation can be directed to Dieter Zetsche, the head of Daimler Chrysler, has opened up to some interesting information. When the question of ‘what engines will be offered in the 2008 Challenger’ is sent in to their inquiry address, this is the reply:

“Dear Patrick:
Thanks for contacting Dr. Z. Your message has been forwarded to us for response. The all-new Dodge Challenger will make its debut as a 2008 model, in calendar-year 2008. It will have the available 5.7-liter or SRT-engineered 6.1-liter HEMI® V-8 engines coupled to either a five-speed manual transmission or five-speed automatic transmission with Auto Stick”

While this bit of information is not exactly official, it does come from a member of the DCX marketing team, so it would lead one to believe that the Challenger will be offered in multiple trim lines. It is assumed that Dodge is releasing the Challenger in 2008 anticipating the release of the Chevrolet Camaro, which is also currently just a concept, but GM executives have said that the Camaro will make it to production in the coming years.

All in all, this announcement and the information surrounding it paint a promising image of a new alternative for both lifelong Mopar enthusiasts and performance car buyers to cars such as the Ford Mustang, and the Pontiac GTO. It appears as though even with fuel prices getting increasingly higher, we are in for another exciting horsepower war, similar to that of the 1960s and 1970s, and this one is rapidly shaping up to be every bit as thrilling as the past horsepower war. Now, all you have to ask yourself, is do you wish to enter that war yielding the 4.6L packed automotive equivalent of a handgun, or a 6.1L packed automotive equivalent of a Sherman tank? The Challenger is a-go and while it will be roughly a year and a half before it becomes available we are certain that this new weapon in the horsepower war will make a lasting impression on its opponents.

The length of this car is too much. It’s 2008! 4.5 meters for sport car is much more logic.
