Chevrolet Camaro Concept

01/07/2006, 10:50 AM

By admin

Combining dramatic design and exciting performance, the 2006/2007/2008/2009 Chevrolet Camaro Concept recaptures the spirit of one of the most popular sport coupes of all time and redefines the Camaro for new generations of fans. The Camaro Concept embodies the performance and passion that have made first-generation Camaros some of the most sought-after collector cars, updating the formula with a fuel-efficient powertrain, sophisticated chassis and contemporary design execution. “The goal is to make the sport coupe relevant to younger enthusiasts while retaining its appeal to its current fans,” GM said.

“Millions of people of all ages fell in love with the Camaro for all of the right reasons,” said Ed Welburn, GM vice president, global design. “Camaros were beautiful to look at and offered performance that could rival expensive European GTs. Yet they were practical enough to drive every day and priced within the reach of many new car buyers.”

Though only a show car at this point, the Camaro Concept is intended to explore customer reaction to design and engineering elements that might lead to an all-new version of the Camaro.

The long hood, short deck and wide stance of the Camaro Concept leave no doubt that it is a serious performance car. Those looks are backed up by a 400-horsepower aluminum small-block V-8, a six-speed manual transmission, and a sophisticated chassis with four-wheel independent suspension.

Like its forebears, the Camaro Concept would be practical enough for everyday use. It features fuel-saving features like Active Fuel Management cylinder deactivation technology, yielding highway fuel economy of 30 mpg or better. Its overall size is a comfortable fit for city streets and suburban parking lots, and its back seat provides occasional seating for two adults.

Lean, muscular design

Because of Camaro’s powerful heritage, the GM Design team chose a theme that pays homage to the original Camaro, while being instantly recognizable as an all-new car.

Said Bob Boniface, director of the Warren Advanced Design Studio, “The fact that the Camaro has been out of production for a number of years made it particularly important that the Camaro Concept honors the Camaro heritage in the right way.”

The 1969 Camaro, considered by many to be the best first-generation design, was a significant inspiration. But as GM design teams in Warren, Mich., worked on alternatives for the Camaro Concept, they also turned to the latest Corvette and to aircraft like the YF-22, seeking a design that encompasses the spirit that made the 1969 Camaro great, but interprets that spirit in a fresh, exciting way.

The cockpit of the Camaro nestles between sharply defined fender forms, a design element inspired by fighter planes and the new Corvette. And like any high-performance vehicle, the clean, purposeful design is integral to the aesthetic. “The Camaro Concept isn’t just a styled shape,” said Peters. “The design incorporates what the vehicle needs to perform to its optimum level.”

The same purposeful design is reflected in the interior of the Camaro Concept. The gauges and splash of orange trim hint at classic first-generation Camaros, but the overall design and execution reflect the no-nonsense functionality that drivers expect from a high-performance Chevrolet sports car.

The Camaro Concept’s six-speed manual transmission provides a wide spread of ratios for aggressive acceleration off the line, confident passing and merging and efficient highway cruising.

Modern sports cars are about more than just straight-line speed, so the Camaro Concept features a sophisticated rear-wheel drive chassis. Its independent front and rear suspension features progressive-rate springs and gas-pressurized dampers. Four-wheel vented disc brakes with 14-inch rotors provide confident stopping under all conditions.

Enhancing both the performance and appearance of the Camaro Concept are unique five-spoke cast alloy wheels, 21 inches in the front and 22 inches in the rear.

An American icon

Designed in the mid-1960s, the first-generation Camaro captured the optimism of an era. The Baby Boomers were in their teens, rock-and-roll and Motown ruled the airwaves, and American culture was sweeping the globe.

“The Camaro Concept is designed to have that same broad appeal, with unmistakable style, spirit and performance,” said Welburn.

Overall, looks sweet. My only complaints are the stupid rear fender “gills.” They were always dumb on the mustang, and they’re doubly dumb on a Camaro. The interior is a bit odd, too, but not more than you’d expect from a concept.

Wake me when they put out the Pontiac…

Just saw the Challenger concept and it gets 100% my vote, your new camaro 1% vote. The new mustang looks like an old one, a success. The new challenger looks like an old one, a success. The new camaro looks like dog do. The thing about the new mustang is the dash looks cheaper than a $1.00 bill but it looks like a 69. The 69 camaro is so beautiful, if it aint broke don’t fix it. New camaro is flop. Sincerely, Bob Paris

The car has defining cues of a first gen Camaro, which makes it genuine to it’s name unlike the GTO. This alone will help to bring back real Camaro enthusiasts. The car also has a very new and fresh moral to it also though which might be enough to bring younger buyers, that may not already have a backgound of Camaro heritage. This could be a very hot seller for GM (a practical muscle car that has 5 major aspects, drivability, fuel mileage, handling, comfort, and high performance). Just imagine if they were to offer a Copo, Yenko, or Baldwin Motion version. Very good competition for the Mustang and the GT500. Now if GM could handle another vehicle of there’s being faster than thier beloved Corvette, that would be a miracle.

“Now if GM could handle another vehicle of there’s being faster than thier beloved Corvette, that would be a miracle.”

Consider that the best engine you can expect to see in this is the 400-hp LS2 (found in the GTO, SSR, and the base ‘Vette), and that it’ll be significantly heavier than the ‘Vette (as a 2+2 seater, and made with steel, instead of composite, body panels). Even given the LS2 engine, this’ll be slower than a ‘Vette. And don’t expect anything near the handling of any ‘Vette, or the power of the Z06.

This is obviously competition for the Mustang, and the Challenger (though it’ll beat the Challenge to market by a couple of years), but not the Ford GT or the Chevy Corvette.

My guess – like most GM concepts, by the time this comes out, the idea and trend will be so tired and old that no-one will care (witness the embarrassment of the SSR – when that first came out it was really cool, and then there was an eternity before the production version was available). GM is so lackadaisical in getting there ideas to fruition – and then when they do, it’s usually underwhelming due to high price, poor build quality, and crummy interior. The new Corvette is a step in the right direction – the new HHR is more of a reality (ie: too little too late)

Somewhere under the skin of this thing is the Camaro concept they SHOULD have built. This is confirmed by the reaction I get from everyone I show it to. See below:

When I showed people pictures of the Mustang concept 2 years ago, they said: “YES! When can I buy one?”

When I now show them the new Challenger concept, they say: “YES! When can I buy one?”

But, when I show them the Camaro concept, they say: “Hmmmm, well I like this and this, but not this and this. It’s ok, I guess.”

The reason? Someone “tweaked” and “modernized” this design before it was built for NAIAS. I guarantee that somewhere, on someone’s desk, is a drawing or clay model of this car’s ORIGINAL design, and it’s beautiful.

It is more like the ‘69 and less “fighter jet” BS. You can see in the overall shape that the right idea was there. It just got “Lutzed” along the way, and lost the pure and simple design that would have had buyers standing in line for it. Hope they fix it before production, or even the Z06 engine won’t be enough to drag buyers from Ford and Dodge.

The stance is right but the front end needs work. Give the headlights a wider diameter, delete the point in the middle and give the grille a little more breathing room so that it doesn’t look like its frowning so much. I love the chop top look.

Power, influence, force, strength, and yet beauty…you just put the muscle back in car. The console gauges are retro nice touch! I just hope this isn’t one of GMs dreams that fades away. Have some guts and compete with the world!!!

Being a Chevy fan, I think the Camaro concept car could compete very effectively against the the new Mustang. Chevy needs an affordable middle class muscle car. The Corvette is too expensive for the average car enthusiast, though envied by all. The GTO is painfully plain and needs to be retrodesigned. Pontiac designers missed the mark on that one! (I use to own a 67 GTO and I can’t stand to look at the new models.) In all cases the key is decent gas mileage with performance.

I never owned a Camaro, but always wanted to and when I seen the pictures I said that’s my next new vehicle. I have to agree with others however; there probably is a drawing or clay model that has even simpler lines and a one that looks great and will sell more than the projected numbers. I also agree that the wheels should not exceed 17 or 18 inches. Great concept, however; as others have suggested tone it down to a the original drawing or clay model.

Make it affordable, fast and dependable.

Leave the door open for some basic owner modifications that will not void the warranty and you would have a winner.

I just hope and pray it will not be too expensive for the average joe.

I also agree that the front end it too pointed from a top down view. This probably assists with the general aerodynamics of the vehicle. I also agree that the grill and head lights could be larger. I asked a friend to look at the new concept and he said it looks like the grill is smiling. I’m a huge fan of Chevrolet but believe the “bowtie” in the front should be replaced by the 3 bar red/white/blue Camaro symbol akin to the Impala symbol. I love the rear fender grills and everything past the front end back.

The front is too pointed and the grill looks cheep in the photos. I would hope that they will only use the rear fender ‘gills’ if they are functional. The rear window looks a little long, but as long as they don’t make it a hatch back it is ok. Over all the car is very nice and a step in the right direction for a company, that if you remove Corvette and Cadillac, has very little as far as cars to look at. I would pay more for this then the Mustang as long as the fit and finish is very high.

This is the type of design I would have expected from DaimlerChrysler (MercedesChrysler, I am sure Walter P. Chrysler rolled over in his grave when the Germans bought Chrysler), not GM. The tail lights remind me of a Corvette, and the interior looks like a space ship (with the yellow accent lights looking like something you’d find in a 20 year boy’s Honda Civic.) As a retro Camaro design, it does not succeed at all, nor does it succeed as a new Camaro….it just looks like some new luxury / sports car, NOT a muscle car…

First of all Thank You Gm for building it and calling it the Camaro rather than Chevelle. As I’ve said on the other blogs….everyone out there that’s shoutin out “Challenger Challenger the best concept everâ€?, pull your head out of your a**es. This isn’t a concept, there’s nothing new about it. It’s a 1972 Challenger that’s simply refined with better cues and smoother edges. Wow…..that must have taken a lot of work from Dodge to come up with. And please tell me who is the person on this thread that set the rule stating that the Camaro HAD to be straight retro??? If you are a tru Camaro enthusiast you will be able to see the 60’s accents in the fender line, hood lines, entire side and yes even the front end. It combines a retro appearance with a modern look that will appeal for many years. Those of you saying that Hortons Design is better…. it is a great design but it’s not realistic. This design would have to share the same platform as the Pontiac Solstice and wouldn’t even be in the same class as the Mustang anymore but rather the Miata. All you haters out there that are saying GM isn’t going to be around long enough to even build this car, do some damn research. GM sold 9.17 million vehicles last year, Toyota only 8.1 mil, and CHEVROLET alone 4.6 million, (for those of you that’s counting Chevrolet alone outsold Ford for the first time since 1986). Oh and you Ford fans, the Great Grand daughter of Henry Ford is one of the most powerful Executives within Ford Motor company and guess what, she really really doesn’t like performance vehicles (ie Mustang). Hats off to GM for creating an outstanding Camaro Concept. It looks immaculant and until it is built I will enjoy smoking 05′ Mustangs and ricers with my 98′ Z28.

I like it, except the front grille needs to be larger. One of the most recognizable features of the old ‘69 was the gigantic maw. This one looks undersized by comparison. If they dropped the bottom part of the grille so that it’s just above the turn lights it would look SWEET. I photoshopped a version for the heck of it and it looks amazing. Wish I could send it to those guys before they start building it.

I’d buy one if it sold for $35k and was AWD, V8, & a 6 speed with ~400-450hp. Or maybe 350-400hp. Chevy needs to embrace AWD, think of the factory racing they could do against european and japanese sports cars and have a damned good chance at beating them. They need to step into the 21st century and not build a car that only a few old geezers might buy because it “Stays true to RWD” or some crap like that. Trust me, make it AWD and it will appeal to a lot more people. Not to mention the fact there won’t be nearly the traction problems with an AWD car than there would be with solely a 2 wheel wonder.

All I am saying is GM needs to build something that sells. AWD, 6 speed V8 would sell. Trust me on this one.

I have owned five Camaros or Firebirds in the past. A ‘68 Firebird, ‘76 Trans Am, ‘79 10th Anniversary Trans Am, ‘80 Camaro RS, and a ‘80 Camaro Z-28 and have loved them all. I haven’t thought about purchasing an F-car since 1980 when I felt the last good ones were made. I now own a ‘94 Mustang GT but when I saw the pictures of this new concept Camaro all I could say was “holy crap, that is one sweet ride” ! It’s about time GM got this going, you must build this car. First thing I said was it looks like a modern ‘69, and I absolutely love it. Keep the goofy scoops and hidden headlights of previous F-cars away and sell this retro look. Since I get a GM discount also I’m ready to buy one. Now gimme a high revin’ 302 like the original ‘69 and let’s go hunt Mustangs once again !!!!

As a sales person it is really hard to sell cars when you really don’t have a real sports car under 50k. I hope they bring this new camaro into production because everyone that I have talked to is really excited about it. I just hope that it doesn’t take to long. One complaint that I am hearing is that the front end looks strange. Hopefully they will redesign the grill. Besides that I think the car looks awesome. Bill in sales……….

This Camaro Concept is by far the most attractive and menacing looking Camaro yet.

This car needs to be put into production 100% AS IS with no changes (aside from losing the orange on the interior, color coordinate it to the exterior perhaps).

Those who are crying ‘it’s not retro enough’ really need to stop living in their younger years and realize this is 2006, not 1969. This Camaro Concept has plenty of retro hints, while not being a direct ripoff of the original like the Mustang and Challenger. How much talent does it take to copy an old design? None.

Everyone I have shown pictures of this new Camaro to have loved it. Only 1 or 2 prefer the carbon copy Challenger. Most are in agreement this Camaro is one of the most threatening (to Mustangs and Rice Burners) looking vehicles they’ve ever seen. The front end looks menacing (don’t look at just the official pics, check out pics others have taken at the car show(s) and the rear with the afterburner style taillights have a very intimidating appearance. As if it’s saying ‘keep off my ass or else’.

If Chevrolet keeps this car within a couple hundred dollars of the Mustang, they may very well have a major threat to the Mustang population…

for the dude who said “AWD” for racing you really need to get some stats straight. this thing would annialiate a G35 coupe. AWD is illegal in all sports where its not completely embraced by the entire lot of competition (exception GT-racing, where only Audi has AWD). AWD is great, but racing youre put into a completely different category. the weight of the AWD system to survive the torque produced by a V8 would heavily offset any benefit to AWD. and AWD is not embraced by many peoples. (Silverado SS, great allpurpuse all season truck, but horrible for sales.)

if they wanna go all out they should get a patent for the VAG DSG. they could also have a 6 or 7 spd version as well, (the 7 would be purely for cruising and mileage)

AWD is great. if you think differently go do some research on Audi’s rallye heritage. there is a reason Audi was barred from rallye, and why AWD was banned from all motorsports at the time. if they were to build an AWD F1 or KART it would be truely astonishing, but for now look at the Audi RS6 that races the Zo6, CTS-V and Viper in GT-series cup racing. my dream car is an RS Avant. 0-60 in under 5 seconds in a wagen. nuff said.

I have seen a few concept cars for the 07′ Camaro. I have owned 3 different camaros and I still think the 67′-69’s look absolutely Mean. I really do NOT like this look that it has been given. It looks too much like the new dodges and is WAY to big. Its almost fat looking and loses its original Sleek Mean appearance it once had. I do like the new look to the old style interior though. I understand your trying to take it into the new millienium but do so with respect with what made it what it is. Sleek it out like its original appearance. The other concept car I seen was red and Extremely mean looking….that one I thought would have been AWESOME. I do not like this look though and it appears this is what has been chosen. If so I will not be buying a new camaro which REALLY saddens me. Just my personal thought.

Heard GM rushed this concept design in order to have something for the JAN 06 Detroit Auto Show. Agree with most that this design needs some tweaking (and hopefully will be), but they have rightly channeled the 1st Gen models. The worst thing GM could do would be to can the entire concept of an affordable, reliable 4-seat sports car (coupe and hopefully convertible) so that they can deliver bland cars like the current Impala and Malibu that only Avis and Hertz will buy.

Had a ‘67 Camaro RS that was absolutely awesome, and would love to see a new-gen adopt the hide-aways and smaller exterior dimensions.

I have mixed feelings about this new concept Camaro. I’ve been the proud owner of 4 first generation Camaro’s and Firebird’s ( 68 RS 4brl 327 and 68 Z/28 302 Camaro’s. 67 4brl 326 and 68 400 firebird’s ). And for me I’m kinda scratchin my head on this one. I’m thinking, Why didn’t GM just create a modern day version of the 1969 Camaro in much the way Chrysler has just recently shown us with their new Dodge Challenger R/T concept that has 1970 written all over it ? .. That Challenger looks fantastic !! .. I’ll probably buy one too if GM dosen’t do something better here with this Camaro concept. This Concept Camaro isn’t a bad looking car. Infact it’s kinda cool looking. But I’d just like to see the new Camaro looking much more like a cleaned up 69 model from front to back than anything else. In my opinion, if GM does that in much the way we have seen with Chrysler and what has been done with this new Challenger car that they are certain to produce, The Camaro sales will go absolutly thru the roof!. Now just try to imagine seeing cowl induction hooded Z/28’s and SS Camaro’s again. Or even some really wild COPO or ZL-1 versions that Chevrolet could offer on a limited run. Automobile shopping would become really fun again and it would also give Ford and Chrysler something to really be concerned with. This new Camaro design will sell for sure. But not anything like a cleaned up 1969 look-a-like would have done.

Dear Bob:

As a former owner of a 68′ SS 396 Camaro, I can say for certain you have successfully “nailed” the new Camaro design. It is beautiful with only one exception – the front grille. If the intent is to offer this grille for standard Camaro’s that’s OK. But be advised this car really needs the black flush mounted grilles with the “Hideaway Headlights” as used in the 67′ thru 69′ era RS option Camaros. This beautiful black checked grille design with matching headlight covers would fit nicely into the new grille opening and camaro rettro concept. I would buy that car with both a ZL-1 engine SS/RS option in a minute.

Please make us believers that your are finally back on track with the american consumers.

If GM can grasp the rettro concept designs then maybe they can also grasp the simple rettro management concept that went hand in hand with these designs:

Make it sharp, Make it happen, Make it affordable.
and listen.

Hears hoping you will once again align with your consumers recommendations.

“Bob make all of us proud of GM and the Chevrolet product….once again”

Any question please advise

If they would atleast make the front end less point and make the whole car slightly more curvy than that would be a Camaro. I think chevy lost it’s way in good looking making cars back when they came out with the ‘82 Camaro. COME ON CHEVY MAKE A MUSCLE CAR THAT LOOKS LIKE A MUSCLE CAR!

The last firebird produced was beautiful I own two and they will be my last new GM’s. If GM wants to do something right again make the camaro as close to the original design as possible or dont do it at all!! If they really want to see some sales reproduce the 58-62 corvette or the 57 chevy bel-air! I’d mortgage my house for one of those.

I am currenty an owner of a 70 blown drag race Camaro. I have also ordered an 07 Mustang. Maybe by the time 09 rolls around, I’ll have a very nice and new Camaro sitting next to it’s older brother. I have always been a lover of Mustangs, but this Concept Camaro has just the right lines to make people want to move out of the way for you. If GM can keep the price down, about where the Mustang currently retails for, people of old and young will be clamoring to buy one, this oldie included. I just wish it wouldn’t take them 2 years to build it. But here’s a good thought; right now the Mustang is the IT car. By the time 2 years have flown by, the Mustangs newness will have worn off. GM is smart by waiting to release the Camaro. Let the fire die down on the Mustang only to be picked up again by the Camaro. Then FORD will have to think of something wild and big to regain the torch. It will be interesting to see the hype, ads, commercials, and talk when the Camaro gets closer to be sitting in hundreds of thousands of driveways. Keep in mind, year one baby!!!!

Don’t make it all show and no go! Scrap the redesign of the failed GTO and make the Trans Am instead. I currently own a 1973, 1979 and 2000 Trans Am and there’s a bay in my garage ready and waiting for a new model! Make the bird fly again and I’ll buy again . . . Thanks!

I love it. When I heard they were bringing back the Camaro I was thrilled. When they discontinued it I was beside myself. I’ve been a Camaro nut since I was 16. Now that I’ve seen it I’m even more excited. I always thought the 1st generation cars were the best looking by far. Do yourself a favor though, don’t ruin it in delayed production, poor fit and finish, and subpar performance. You have to be at least on par with the best Ford has with the Mustang, the GT500 is carrying 500 hp, not to mention the Dodge Challenger is supposed to be carrying 425. Like I said I love the look, only complaint is the pointed nose but hey I’m not gonna complain. You bring out that car, looking as is, with the power to compete, and I’ll be buying my fourth Camaro.

The Camaro looks like a winner!!! (interior needs refinement though). I’m excited about the Challenger as well. Finally American Auto makers are, well, GETTING IT! The Production model better be near-idential to the concept. The mustang concepts looked cool and then the production models came out cheesy (narrow body/track, small wheels in gigantic empty wheel wells, a riduculously high stance, and ugly bulky rear end) I can only hope the Camaro doesn’t suffer these atrocities. I think the design is fantastic for re-invigorating the Chevy nameplate, and GM in general. The Solstice/Sky/Opel GT platform, the new G6 bodies, and this are proof the GM isn’t as dumb and docile and some would make them out to be.
This a great looking car, well-suited to its roots and a future. However…
what will make or break this car is without a doubt, its pricing.
If the base camaro starts at the smae price as the base Mustang, with a minimum 200 hp 6 cylinder, GM will make money. Looking to the past however, GM tries to justify pricing the camaro 3,000 to much, giving away a significant amt of market to Ford and others because they think that the better performance and package of the camaro should make it be worth more money. But how do you grab a youthful market, like my the college kids excited to get there first car? If a Mustang is 18 grand and a camaro is 21 grand, I’d buy the mustang. As much as I love Chevy and camaros, 3 grand is a huge difference to that price market.

There are a lot of valid points to read here. I agree with much of what has been said here and I hope that someone at GM is reading them too. I do like Kris Horton’s concept designs and am quite disappointed with the current Camaro concept car. About all I see right is the size. I see way too many borrowed ideas in the composition of the car. Rear end looks like a vette, front end does not look like a Camaro – it looks like something out of the Cadillac/Brinks design studio and for heavens sake the doors and sides look exactly like a Mustang! How on earth could GM have missed this??? Ford is going to have a field day with this! The interior is garish and cheesy too! Please tone it down. Yes, I was around when the Camaro first came out in 1967 so I would be considered a purist, BUT I am interested in seeing the new Camaro with a slightly different look from original and again………..all you have to do is look at Kris Horton’s work to see exactly how to do it. Because when all is said and done, and everybody has had their say………remember this. The first generation Camaro is what caught the imagination of a generation when it first came out because of it’s design and that design is it’s roots. It should be obvious to anyone watching the resurgence of the muscle car designs (notably Mustang and Challenger) that the look is what initially attracts people to the car and that Ford and Dodge are paying close attention to the “root” design of the car. You stray away from that winning formula and you end up with a bland car, something that people do not look at twice. The Mustang looks terrific (and I have never been a Ford fan) and so does the Challenger. Shades of 1964 1/2 GM. When are you ever going to learn? (and to think that they had Mr Horton’s design to look at too). I’m really hoping that they nail it on the production version, but I have serious doubts about the design team and what they have put together so far.
