Toyota to use zip ties as temporary floor mat remedy

10/08/2009, 9:52 AM

By Andrew Ganz

Toyota has told its North American dealerships to attach driver’s side floor mats to metal seat rails with self-locking wire ties, better known as zip ties, as what the automaker calls a “semi-permanent” fix.

The Japanese automaker recalled more than 3.8 million vehicles in response to a floor mat that wedged itself against a gas pedal in a Lexus ES 350, killing four in a gruesome wreck.

“We have reviewed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration what we’re calling a semi-permanent floor mat installation process, and we’re providing these instructions to our dealers,” Toyota spokesman Brian Lyons told Automotive News.

“This allows dealers to continue selling and delivering both new and used vehicles.”

Dealers are instructed to attach a warning label to the mats instructing drivers not to stack two floor mats on top of each other.

It is a WORLD economy, not just an American economy.

And no I did not lose my job, I have a very good job. I enjoy working with ALL different automotive companies, and some off-road companies, some of which are out of the country. This isn’t 1965. LWA, since the problem was identified as the connection to the carpet being a POS, my solution is that they replace the carpet with one with a stable connector and also the floormat with a proper hole to stick it in. Asking Lexus drivers to have their interiors zip-tied together is a bit of a diss. Toyota drivers deserve to be dissed, but not by Toyota. That being said, I alternate from factory floormats to unsecured rubber ones in winter and never have this issue. I think the drivers are just as retarded in this case for kicking around their mats like idiots.

Before anyone jumps on me for that last part, I have a question: Ever notice that your driver’s seat and foot area, which maybe has someone in it 35% of the time you drive, gets filthier than the driver’s area you are in that is occupied 100% of the drive time? That’s because there are a lot of discourteous, inattentive pigs in this world (your friends among) who need to be shot, or at least be told to not be idiots.

One other thing – years ago I had a friend with an old 1970’s Civic that was passed down from his folks who bought it new. Honda secured the backseat cushions with … VELCRO. No joke. 5 or 6 strips of velcro. You could pull the thing out in 20 seconds. It was hilarious.

Leftwingagenda come on there are many better solutions then zip ties out and a company like Toyota should figure that out and not waste people time with something like this and they said “semi permanent”.

other solutions could be use of Velcro on the underside of the mats (not that that’s ideal but it better). or they could install anchor hokes in the car it would not be all that difficult, just a few 4 holes drilled (like my 01 accord has). those are some idea i came up with in a few seconds that are cheap and quick.

smegley, read long dong auto’s comment…remember when this story first broke and it was released that the dealer installed the wrong mat in the car? the *dealer*…so toyota gets all this static because a dealer screwed up and switched mats; and that act, by some freak bad luck, ended horribly…now the manufacturer is forced to retroactively dummy-proof the floor mats in all their cars so this can’t happen again? eep…

the solution you suggest is that every car (millions, remember) come in and have their floor carpet replaced with one that has a snap or some other connector built in…perfectly valid solution to the problem, from the perspective of the consumer…compared to a zip tie, though, i’m guessing replacing the carpet and floor mat in 3+ million cars is a lot more expensive than zip ties…but hey, maybe these will be classy zip ties with the lexus logo to accent the decor?

after thinking about this a bit, there probably is a kind of clip that you could use that would require poking a hole in the carpet to install, yet provide a base for attachment like a snap or hook…that wouldn’t require replacing the carpet…

Wouldn’t a cheaper solution (in the future) is to design the gas pedal to be a little higher up (ie more clearance from the floor) so any improperly fitted floor mat not wedge up against it? Of course, having a hook to hold the mat in place should be a given. I’m surprised this floor mat fiasco has reached endemic proportions at Toyota. worst, here’s an example of those early reports: http://blogs.insideline.com/straightline/2009/09/toyota-orders-floor-mat-inspection-after-fatal-crash.html

“Mismatched floor mats in a Lexus ES 350 dealer courtesy car are being blamed for an August 28 crash that took the lives of Mark Saylor, his wife, daughter and brother-in-law. Saylor, 45, was a 19-year veteran of the California Highway Patrol.

Tomorrow Toyota will issue an order to 1,400 Toyota and Lexus dealerships to inspect the floor mats in all their new, used and loaner vehicles to make sure all mats fit properly.

A non-standard, all-weather floor mat in the driver foot well of the ES 350 apparently became caught under the gas pedal and Saylor wasn’t able to free it. The Lexus was reportedly moving at a 120-mph clip on California Highway 125 when it hit an SUV, launched off an embankment and rolled multiple times before bursting into flames. The SUV driver survived with moderate injuries.”

i haven’t heard much additional detail beyond that…toyota has apparently had complaints previously about floor mats in other models, so i’m guessing this horrific accident has pushed them to the “ok, we have to do something” stage…

LWA – on another blog they showed the analysis of the flaw in the original Toyota design. It had to do with an attachment clip that was completely removable so that if you dont want floor mats you dont have a little post coming out of the carpet. You do have a little hole, though

I think Toyota could just use that little hole. Have each car come in, take off the lower door rail, lift the carpet, and stick a little bolt under it with maybe a 6 inch disc around it for stability, tighten down a flat nut over the top to secure it, and glue a plastic tip over the bolt so it does not have sharp edges. This mimicks the system most cars use. Then if the old floormat hole lines up, secure it down, otherwise provide a new mat. If they design this right it’s about 20 minutes work per vehicle max. Probably more like 12 minutes once the process is wired. Plus it isnt some cheezy ziptie.

Also, my bet is the ziptie is a temporary solution required a return later for a proper solution. What I wrote here could be designed in a week and initial parts could be out in transit in 2 weeks, and avaoid being a pain in the customer’s butts twice.

Well it turns out the cases were not closing properly. So the solution our tech department came out with was to send out large rubber mallets so that the customers who just spent 200k to 500k on these units could pound the case closed. And they did send it out too, complete with instruction on exactly where to smack the hell out of your high priced highly sensitive equipment

No people who work at a Honda or Toyota plant did not sell out their country, they are working so they can make money to put food on the table for themselves and their family. Just like any other worker in America.

Anybody else notice how as they have made press releases about different stances and ideas about this stuff they have gotten more and more “Sure” it was the floormats that did the damage? I was under the impression the NHTSA was getting involved because it MAY well be the computer, but as long as toyota keeps releasing news about floor mats and keeps changing the language about the details of the big accident no one will be the wiser.

I think every toyota owner should pull out their floormats and drive heel to floor for a while and see what toyota says when it still happens.

What is the big deal here. Just a mat and they recalled the car so that is still a good customer support, recalling for a very minor issue. GM cars break down mechanically and have fun fixing them. Mechanics love GM owners and no wonder used GM cars are POS. The reason I drive a Caddy because it is only a year old and bought it for 50% less than buying a new Caddy. Sad to see how American cars lose their value so quick

It’s nearly 11:00 in my neck of the woods, and it appears my prediction was incorrect. Darn.

Ghetto, the big deal is that the sudden acceleration issue is real, and people have died because of it. Toyota is claiming the cause is floor mats (seems small, but when people die, it isn’t small), and instead of fixing the hooks or the mats, they are using ideas stolen from http://www.thereifixedit.com to solve their problem quickly. In my opinion, it’s an effective solution to slipping for mats for now, but I don’t believe the floor mats are all that is causing the issue. Even though it will work, it’s still hilarious.

“An independent investigator for the UN says racism in Japan is deep and profound, and the government does not recognise the depth of the problem.”

Japan Prejudice and Black Sambo
By John Greenwald

2008 Human Rights Report: Japan

“There were some cases of violence and other abuse against women and children and of sexual harassment and employment discrimination. Trafficking in persons remained a problem. Discrimination against ethnic and other minorities and against children borne out of wedlock were problems.”

National/Racial/Ethnic Minorities

Burakumin (descendants of feudal era “outcasts”) and ethnic minorities experienced varying degrees of societal discrimination. The approximately three million burakumin, although not subject to governmental discrimination, frequently were victims of entrenched societal discrimination, including restricted access to housing, education, and employment opportunities. NGOs reported that discrimination was still extensive outside major metropolitan areas.

Despite legal safeguards against discrimination, the country’s large populations of Korean, Chinese, Brazilian, and Filipino permanent residents–many of whom were born, raised, and educated in Japan–were subject to various forms of deeply entrenched societal discrimination, including restricted access to housing, education, and employment opportunities. There was a widespread perception among citizens that “foreigners,” often members of Japan born ethnic minorities, were responsible for most of the crimes committed in the country. The media fostered this perception although Ministry of Justice statistics showed that the “foreigner” committed crime rate, excepting crimes like illegal entry and overstay, was lower than the crime rate for citizens.

Many immigrants struggled to overcome obstacles to naturalization, including the broad discretion available to adjudicating officers and the great emphasis on Japanese language ability. Aliens with five years of continuous residence are eligible for naturalization and citizenship rights. Naturalization procedures also require an extensive background check, which includes inquiries into the applicant’s economic status and assimilation into society. The government defended its naturalization procedures as necessary to ensure the smooth assimilation of foreigners into society.

The lot of you idiots here are real pathetic. Of course, the guy who claims that Japan is full of racists fails to realize that only senior Japanese citizens are somewhat intolerant of foreigners, and they don’t exactly make up the entire population of Japan. The majority of young people in Japan, however, are way more tolerant and nicer to foreigners than the old ones are. One of my friends would know, since he went there for a small vacation, and he never felt discriminated over there.

Then again, most of you uninformed ass-hats here have probably never traveled outside of America to know this snippet of information.

racism doesn’t always mean intolerance, and prejudice/stereotyping is not automatically racism.

This really has no bearing on the article. What DOES is the fact that toyota and the NHTSA are both promoting the idea the floor mats cause these problems when its been said many times the culprit is far more likely to be the Computer.
