Mercedes will not discontinue legendary G-Class

Contrary to several published reports, Mercedes said today that it will not discontinue the G-Class SUV. The car continues to be very popular among customers, and it has been part of the Mercedes product lineup for
the past 26 years. Recent reports had suggested the truck would be discontinued after the launch of the new GL-Class. The vehicle’s striking shape, which has remained nearly unchanged over a period of almost three decades, has made the “G a design classic with cult status. Together with its legendary ruggedness, the off-roader’s design has contributed most to its popularity. The SUV will continue to be built by Magna Steyr. Meanwhile, Mercedes announced it will product the all-new 2007/2008 E-Class in-house at the DaimlerChrysler plant in Sindelfingen.

That’s great news, as there are too few vehicles left in this class in the world today. It’s the G-class, Land Rover Defender and the sturdier variants of the Toyota Landcruiser and Nissan Patrol.

Thank God. Mercedes needs something to compete against the Range Rover. I really liked the G500 when I drove it. But as soon as I sat in the Range Rover, I said this was it . . . and I bought one! The Range Rover is by far the most incredible Lux SUV in existence.

I don’t think that the new GL-class is going to have the cache that the old Geländewagen had!

Wish they would release a slightly updated version of it. Needs some slight cleaning up. Make it look a bit less busy, but keep the overall shape the same. It would be a big hit all over again methinks.
