A new report suggests Mercedes may offer a less expensive version of its popular CLS four-door-coupe in the United States for the 2007 model year. Currently, the luxury automaker only offers its CLS500 and CLS 55 models in the United States. The CLS500 costs $64,900, while the CLS55 AMG is $86,600 — putting the CLS out of reach for many consumers. In Europe, Mercedes currently offers a less expensive model called the CLS350. Mercedes and BMW, among others, sometimes withhold base models of their luxury cars to boost their premium image in North America (for example, BMW does not offer its 630ci here). However, it appears Mercedes may have seen sufficient demand for such a vehicle to warrant bringing it stateside. The CLS350 features a 272 horsepower engine with a 0-60 time of 6.8 seconds. Leftlane estimate a CLS350 in the United States would cost between $51,000 and $53,000.

Makes one wonder what the US price for a CLS350 would be. In Germany, the CLS350 has a base price of €56.028 ($65,563.96). While that includes 16% sales tax, it’d be interesting to see by how much they’ll manage to undercut the CLS500.
