Coupe

Full reveal: Mitsubishi Concept-RA

In November, Mitsubishi released sketches of its Concept-RA ahead of the car’s debut at the Detroit auto show. One image of the car leaked online this weekend, and the automaker finally fully unveiled the car at a press conference today. The car is believed to be an indicator of the design direction for the next-generation Eclipse coupe.

Reminiscent of Mitsubishi’s Eclipse models, the Concept-RA uses light-weight body panels — including an aluminum space frame — and all-wheel drive.

Power for the Concept-RA comes from a turbocharged 2.2L clean diesel — with MIVEC continuously variable valve timing control — rated at 200 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. Unlike other clean diesels, Mitsubishi’s system doesn’t require the injection of Urea to meet strict U.S. emission standards.

That power is put to the ground through the same Twin Clutch SST transmission found in the Lancer Evolution X. The Concept-RA is also packed with several other technologies, such as Active Steering and Active Damping control to aid in the car’s handling.

If Mitsubishi could make its production cars as appealing as this concept, they could really make some progress into turning their fortunes around. Except for the Lancer and Evo X, there isn’t much else in their portfolio that I would care to own. The brand used to be an edgier alternative to the mainstream Asian brands, but now they are a faded relic of what they used to be. I would love to see them experience a Renaissance.

Mitsu is on a row, I like where it is going! Actually, newer Mitsu (2003 and later) is more reliable and does not break that easily. Time will tell if they are up to Honda reliability. The smaller Japanese brands (in terms of US market) like Mitsu, Mazda and Suzuki are coming along nicely.

Mitsubishi needs to keep going with this look. The new Lancer is incredible, looks great in person. It’s easily the best looking small car out right now. It really has roots in the late 90’s Galant. Update the new Galant to share this look, and apply it to the Eclipse. Maybe add another model somewhere in between the Galant and the Lancer. Push the Galant up market (think Nissan Maxima), and create a sporty Camry/Accord/Malibu fighter. All the sudden Mitsu looks like a great threat/alternative. I’m considering the new Lancer for my wife.

Looking at this concept, not only would I buy this car, but I’d buy it dinner and sleep with it as well.

As the owner of a 97 Talon Tsi AWD, I have been awaiting a car truly worthy of being it’s successor.
It’s still a concept, and thus a dream, and concepts usually carry a lot of wishful thinking.
Even if the proposed turbo diesel didn’t come to production, a high strung turbo charged inline 4 with AWD with this body on it would be enough for me to ask “how much, and when can I have one?”

I will NEVER part with my Talon, but when the time comes to retire it, I’d be glad to make this concept my new daily driver. I can’t wait to see the prototype at the show.

It’s simply Audi R8 meets Ferrari, beautifully executed. Throw in the 2.0T from the Evo X and you’ve got yourself a winner. This wouldn’t be a new Eclipse unless they planned on releasing it in 3 years as a 2011 model, by then no one would care because every other brand would already have had their coupes on the market for that amount of time. Introducing this one along with the Eclipse as an alternative priced slightly above $30K, with a more upscale interior would make worth a trip to the showroom. Lancer GT anyone!!

1. we will not see clean diesel (or dirty one for that matter). I don’t believe Mitsubishi will master CAFE regs, much less California’s.

3. Did anyone try Eclipse? Go to a dealer (if you can one find one that is not bankrupt already) and try to sit and drive that car. It is the least comfortable car one can imagine (teenager mobile they don’t know any better)

Mitsubishi has been very assertive lately. With the Lancer getting bigger and more “adult”, this new coupe should be a shoe-in. I would doubt the Diesel for US markets in the first couple of years of the car, but Everything else should make it to market. They have been keen to brought their show cars to market largely as is, much like what Chrysler was doing in the 1990s.

Go for it. The second and third Gen Eclipse were always on my short list of cars to consider. Call what ever you want (”Eclipse”, “3000GT”, whatever) , as long as you call it “for sale”.

The rear reminds you of a Porsche.. and that’s a bad thing? Well to each his/her own. Frankly I don’t see it. I did in the G35 coupe but not here, but only the suggestion of a 911’s profile. The tail lights on this car might suggestion a 928 though. I’m also getting GTP influences and of course and evolution of the current Eclipse/Galant coupe.

I think the dinky spoiler kind of skews things badly. Could be bigger to stand out more deliberately or body color to NOT stand out so much. As is the Spoiler looks dinky, cheap, tacked-on. But that’s hardly going to get me to think poorly of this car. Overall, it is the best looking Eclipse so far.

The current one looks good too but mechanically leaves me cold. If the new car has AWD, a hot engine, and a healthy amount of Aluminum and a reasonable price, then it’s back on my short list.

I agree that the spoiler is a bit small, but then look at the Audi R8, Lambo M both flush body spoiler that stick out when in use and it works for them. As for the Porsche comment. I just don’t like the way it rolls down with a smooth curve, it didn’t look right on the previous Eclipse. I would have preferred to see something more like the Genesis Coupe rear end, but then everyone has their tastes.

Idiot, others have agreed with me here in the last week about the Workopolis ad and I’m pretty sure not all of them switched to Firefox, so your pathetic argument is WRONG … point being, dufus, it’s not our responsibility to change our lives to avoid nonsense presented by this site which could redeploy that ad the same way all other ads are displayed here. If this site is concerned with every poster’s satisfaction with their experience here, it would do something to address the issue and not hope that those who have a problem would inconvenience themselves to avoid an issue brought on by the site itself. The fact that this ad is not receiving the attention it should, via NoScript for example, only reinforces the need to change, if not remove completely, its format by not annoying the fraction of its audience that does see it. It’s failing both ways.

Do you understand any of this logic yet, worthless jackasses? LLN needs to cater to ALL of its readers regardless of browser.

Impulsive, the black plastic grill is on the current Eclipse and Lancer. It makes both cars look cheaper than the rest of the design would have suggested. Sportiness does not exclude classiness. I was saying that the lines in Mitsu’s new designs are there to compete with others, but its in the finishing department that I take issue with. And fnding the same black plastic treatment on a concept, where expense shouldn’t be as much a factor indicates that the tacky trend will continue.

I sort of understand what you’re saying. I believed you took issue with the plastic on the production car (where that hood wouldn’t show up) but I may have been wrong. Regardless, we’re both pretty sure that hood is a no-go. As for the grill, if you look at all competitors, they all have black plastic grills (not that it makes things all right). And it works for that class of vehicles … everything from the RX-8 to the Cooper S to the Si. If you WERE referring to the concept, I agree … should have been more “finished”.

I am the proud owner of a 92 plymouth laser and a 92 galant vr-4. I can blame myself for very single problem that i have had with them. my girl has a 95 mirage that has never been serviced EVER (other than oil) with 170k and it has never had single problem.

anyway, i really hope they put this thing into production it makes me wet just thinkig about it. I was very disapointed when they stoped making the (real) eclipse and i have been long waiting a new 2dr awd to replace it. seeing this is like a dream come true.
