New photos have emerged of Mitsubishi’s forthcoming Concept-ZT, which is set to debut at the this October’s Tokyo Motor Show. It is believed the ZT signals Mitsubishi’s design intentions for the next Galant sedan.
The concept is powered by a 2.2 liter clean diesel that produces 187 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels via Mitsubishi’s new Twin-Clutch SST transmission — a feature also expected to debut on the Concept cX. The Concept-ZT saves weight by using an all-aluminum space frame.
The ZT boasts a number of safety features, including a pop-up hood for increased pedestrian protection. The four-door sedan also uses a new all-around camera system that allows the driver to view more than just what is behind the car — similar to the system found on the Infiniti EX.
i MIEV Sport
Also expected at the October show is the i MIEV Sport, based on the automaker’s i MIEV all-electric car. Like the i MIEV, the Sport uses a a rear-midship layout with its lithium-ion batteries stored underneath the passenger floor.
The powertrain consists of two electric motors in the front — one to power each wheel — and one motor providing power to the rear-wheels. The i MIEV Sport’s interior uses Mitsubishi’s “Green Plastic” — a feature the automaker will debut in its Concept cX next week.

I would think that the Concept-ZT is a preview of the Galant replacement. It looks kind of bland and awkward at the same time, much like the midsize sedan leaders Accord and Camry. It is definitely better looking than the flat out bizarre current generation Galant. Maybe Mitsubishi decided that following the leaders bland and awkward theme might finally bring them some success in this segment. It would have to sell a little better than the current generation.

The engine in ZT has tremendous promises. I am not aware of production Otto engine of 2.2L displacement to churn out 180 HP and even with turbo they can’t produce almost 300 lb-ft of torque.

This looks like the new Diamante, which I liked alot….ok couldn’t hold a straight face for that long. Mitsubishi needs to get a better imagination if it is to survive, while keeping their reliability record good. The Evo can’t be the company’s halo car, and that sell in far too small numbers to save them. Create small to midsize cars that have a bit of imagination and they might make it.

Mitsubishi is not so smart producing concept vehicles such as these. They need to make production cars that sell in order to generate a profit. I would never buy either of these two concept cars as they look extremely ugly. All of Mitsubishi’s cars and trucks are ugly except the new lancer which is OK looking. That is the only exception in Mitsubishi’s current line up.

When a company speaks to their engineers to design something, do they specifically say??
“I want you to design something weird… and ugly.. oh and make sure it is something we will never build! because all we want to do is waste our time and money.. remember now. the point is to be unrealistic.” AND STUPID!

Concept cars are designed to turn heads not come out in their concept form. I’m more interested in the fast hub motor drivetrain. This drivetrain and the Chevy Volt concept drivetrain will soon be integrated into most vehicles on the road. Fast and quiet…nice….but mostly fast!

The sedan is OK looking as I think it might be the design direction for the new Galant. The interior is futuristic as most concepts are. The “VW Beetle” car is just so ugly. Mitsubishi must make cars that sell in order for them to generate income to spend money on these type of concept cars. Both cars should be redesigned heavily if ever mass produced.

dammit to hell mitsubishi….just when i was starting to think you guys were on the right path….
i was afraid they would do this, which is go the Audi route and make all of your cars look the same. (at least audi does a good job at it though). This car looks like the smashed up the fron end of the lancer stapled on the sides of a 7 Series and then slapped on the ass of a Hyundai Sonata. Nothing about this car says original, not to mention its ****ing ugly. At least the new lancer looks good.

I was noticing that the 1996-2002 Galants were pretty good sellers and the last one I have barely seen. They need to get this design finalized and out. It can give the lower end family cars like the Malibu and Aura G6 a run for their money

Ironic that the ZT concept is named after the Rover 800-based MG ZT.. since they actually look very similar. It also reminds me a LOT of the first Hyundai XG300, which ironically was based on a Mitsubishi floorpan and V6 driveline. This may have been an appropriate Galant in 2000, but not in 2010.

I know they used to have the Precis which was an Excel back in the late 80’s If so its sad bc Hyundai has come a long way and I know I see more of them onthe road then Mitsu’s

It’s nice, but it sure isn’t very original—at least not the back end. I see a LOT of Audi A5 and new BMW 3 series in the back.
It must be getting really hard to come up with truly original design ideas these days, ’cause I’m sure not seeing many.

Hey Mitsu, you need to go back to the drawing board with this one. Your new Lancer and Outlander are awesome but this future Galant just doesn’t cut. The Lancer-esque front end is fine but the rest of the car’s shape doesn’t work. If you’re going to continue your sales comeback in America, you’re going to have to do better than this. There is nothing about this concept that generates excitement at any level.
