A V8 Volvo XC90 for Pope Benedict XVI

06/28/2006, 2:28 PM

By admin

Volvo today presented Pope Benedict XVI with an XC90 SUV. The delivery of the keys to the Pope took place in the Vatican, during a short ceremony after the Papal Audience. The Volvo XC90 delivered to the Pope – and fitted for his personal use – is a V8 version. It is a dark blue XC90 with light interiors. Images after the jump…

#1 and #2, I am actually offended by those remarks, and Im not easliy offended. Insulting the Pope nothing for anybody and makes you look like a stupid prick.

#3, true, but Pope Benedict XVI has only been Pope for a short while, so we’ll have to see…

I’m reminded of Ancient Rome when I hear how Christians today are vilified and hated.

I reserve the right to call the Pope a poopoo head if I so feel like it. That said I do not know him so ill reserve judgement for later.

As to the car, well I guess Volvo is now Pope Certified.

The pope does not deserve free cars he is anti contraceptives which would help stem the spread of aids and is an evil man

A little pope joke…..

One day while the pope was riding to the chapel, he wanted to drive..of course the chauffer couldnt say no. So while the pope was drivin he was tailgating and speeding pass other drivers on the highway..A police officer comes by and pulls him over. The police officer radioed the headquarters saying ive pulled over someone really important. Who is it the Sheriff said.. I dont know but the chauffer is the pope

A car offered to any Pope is strange. Surely Volvo could have found another more notable cause, like offering that same XC90 to a charity for an auction where the proceeds could be put to good use. Will the Pope even have an opportunity drive the car? I doubt it.

There also seems to be little marketing value by Volvo’s Papal gesture – is Volvo expecting to sway prospective XC90 buyers by claiming that, “Hey, Even the Pope drives an XC90… Shouldn’t you?” Okay, I’m not Catholic – so maybe this type of rationale is wasted on me.

Who knows

Your wrong Kmoney, they get something out of insulting the Pope – a rise out of you. The Pope is a big boy, he can take some criticism. I do where you’re coming from though, you’ll now be able to tell ol’ Saint Pete that you defended the pope on that crappy automotive blog. That alone should get you a free pass through the Pearly Gates….

Have driven the XC90 on many occasions and honestly the car is crap. Sure, a Cayenne or a Q7 is (much) more expensive, but then again they offer a lot more value for the money. That said I feel the biggest insult you can make is giving the pope an XC90.
The car is just not up for it. Too small, suspension is not as it should be, lot of technical problems, etc.

The pope was forced into the SS youth but eventually ran away to continue studying to be a priest. If he was a closet homo why hasn’t he done anything to change the church’s stance on homosexuality? grow up guys.

Why give a rich guy a free car that he will never be able to drive? This is a waste of an average SUV.

As to the insults…I am not in favor of tearing people down for the sake of fun – but there is much truth to what has been said…

He is an ex Nazi. Fact.
The Catholic church has defended and tolerated pedophilia, homosexuality and sex abuse for many decades. As a high ranking priest, cardinal and now Pope that makes this guy party to it.

The Catholic church is corrupt – He is the Pope – that make party to the filth that goes on there.

Personally, I think this is getting way out of hand. The Pope got an XC90, and that’s all that was important. Whether or not we like or dislike him is irrelevant. Attacks at one another about religious preferences should be carried out elsewhere, not on a website about cars. Please people, try and keep this civil.

Come on now, the Catholic church has more money and global influence than most nations. They can take a joke or three.

I’m just disappointed that the new car doesn’t have the bubble that he used to sit in, on top of the old Pope-mobile. Had kind of a “Pope Floats” effect.
