AC Schnitzer gives 6-Series an overhaul with ‘Tension’ kit

09/19/2006, 9:22 AM

By admin

AC Schnitzer has unveiled the production version of its latest customization kit for the BMW 6-Series and M6. Called the Tension Street Version, the kit introduces new air intakes, revised front and rear aprons, a rear carbon diffuser, a stainless steel twin exhaust system, custom wheels, a two-tone paint scheme, and a custom trunk lid. For the 6-Series, a choice of 367 and 411 horsepower engines are offered. No changes are made to the M6’s engine, but brakes are upgraded for increased stopping power. Inside, carbon and aluminum trim is added, and the speedometer now reflects a top speed of 330 km/h. Gallery after the jump…

This is a good example of what they call “gilding the lily”. It’s different from stock, but not really better.

A few things:

I’ve been following the Tension concept. It’s been out for about a year now. The original was a wide body concept. Although it does look tacky, there are things about it that I do like. First, I like the side vent body panels. The original Tension concept side vent body panel looked fantastic, this one, however, is not so nice. I also like the air intake before the rear wheels to channel more air to the rear brakes.

The side profile of the original tension concept MINUS the wing, was alot more interesting than the original 6 series profile, in my opinion. **This** version of the Tension from the side profile isn’t any better than the original 6 or worse; it’s just different.

You can probably order these parts in different colors so if you don’t like the two-tone scheme, you don’t have to have it.

The front intake is not my cup of tea. The back trunk is a much better improvement over the stock 6 trunk for the coupe. The stock 6 back trunk for the convertible fits the car just nicely.

Finally the rims are the prettiest I’ve seen for the 6, but they are the lightest rims I’ve found so far. So 6 series owners like me, this is good news, we are finally seeing some mod products out there for our car, even if it’s not that pretty.

The two tone doesn’t do it for me, just paint it blue.

Who buys these tuner cars? Honestly? It’s not a souped up Scion every other person can buy?

Who buys souped up cars? I don’t know. But the mentality exists regardless of the economic class. You got the low end: souped up scions; then souped up supras; then souped up Mustangs, Nissans and Infinitis, and Lexus; then souped up mercs, bmw, audis (I’m in this class.); then souped up Porsches; then souped up Aston Martins;then souped up Lambos and Ferraris.

Notice for any class, most of the owners worry about the previous class “catching up”, and day dream about being rich enough to go to the next class. And then there’s a handful of owners of each class that are happy with what they have and just wanna have fun driving.

Toy Yoda,
Driving a modified 318i isn’t anything to brag about ;) .

This AC is just too busy for my tastes, but different strokes for different folks.

I don’t think the tail looks any better and its painted black to hide how it really looks

Is it just me or does the new trunk look more “stock” than the original? I mean how the lines flow better with the rest of the car (imagine it were painted body color).

I don’t have a 3. I have a 6, which I’ve been mulling over for the last year or so whether to send it to Racing Dynamics to get it modded. I’ve never owned a modded car; I’m real curious to know what it’s like.

Not a fan of the two-tone either. Now it looks like shamu. The giant “Tension” logo on the back is pretty lame, too. But I like the wheels.

Toy Yoda,
Ahh, I took your “(I’m in that class)” to mean you owned a modified Merc, BMW, or Audi. I was just giving you a hard time. As for actually owning a modified vehicle, I love every minute of it. They tend to break more often than stock vehicles though, but it’s a price I’ve come to accept.
