It is nice to know that there are manual hybrids in existence. And I am hoping the AWD will be similar to the performance verisons of the Audi. With that being said, i do not have a good understanding how the SH-AWD system works. Or whether or not 100% of the power can go to the rear wheels. The weight of this car has not explicitly stated yet or at least in the article. In general with everything else being equal the more parts needed to build the car, the more weight. I have high expectations of this car and Honda has not impressed me lately. Anything can change from concept to production.

It's a SH-AWD cropped off Accord. It maybe decent but not an 80k vehicle. It will be based off the Accord with tidbits of their parts bin making up the vehicle. Honda is too cheap to have a real sports car or pickup truck.

Generally I agree. The NSX was the car the Pontiac Fiero would have been if GM did not have the heads up their butts and just let Pontiac run with the car. A 3.8 S/C V6, slightly longer and wider to handle the speed and power, and still very inexpensive. But it ran afoul of GM's Performance Hierarchy and endangered the Corvette. So instead of building a better Corvette, they killed the Fiero.

Anyway, The NSX did prove to be one of the greats. But it was pretty quickly outgrow, admittedly. That and Honda's attempt to run the car in the 24 Hours of LeMans ended with the car blowing up 20 minutes in, and Honda NEVER tried again. Talk about a learning experience deferred.

Also, I would never call the NSX a "Super car", that is a monicker the Japanese put on the car, and it did not deserve it. But it was one of the best sports cars Japan ever rolled out, price not withstanding.

I don't expect the new NSX will cost less than $60K however.

Intercooler,

I agree with all of your points. Also, there are exactly two hybrid production cars with three-pedal manual transmissions: the original Honda Insight two-seater, and the current Honda CR-Z. So the engineers producing this NSX successor certainly have the experience and knowhow to offer a true manual in their super car.

As with all things related to Honda's sadism, just because they know how to do something good or how to amaze us with a special car once in a while does not necessarily mean they will.

Success of this car all depends on how well thought out the handling is and how unhindered the drivetrain in the back is.

As well, after some recent discussion with a friend about Honda's current drive-by-wire-throttle implementation, they had better sort that out before real drivers will accept a hybrid NSX drivetrain as canon.

Honda/Acura have a lot to live up to. They also need to restyle this concept car. It looks awful in comparison to the timeless looks of the 1990-2002 NSX models.

So what happened to the front engined coupe? Will that become the S2000 (or whatever the correct number should be).

I'm glad Honda saw the light and made this a mid-engined coupe. They just need to revise that awful can opener grille. It looks better than other Acuras, but it needs something fresh.

NSX was quite famous for being the first exotic car that was not a pain to live with and could also drive like a Civic or Accord when you wanted it too. Other supercar s could not do that, so for that it deserves credit. Type-R was for Acura what GNX was to Buick (The OLD Buick, not the fake one of today)- a very awesome performance car.

The NSX was far from "one of the best there ever was". It looked nice, and handled well. but it didn't have a whole hell of a lot of power. It isn't something most would call a real "supercar". They took a sports car and charged a ton of money for it.

After teasing us with the beautiful HSC concept and then nauseating us with the later front-engined coupe design studies, Honda has succeeded in evoking no emotions whatsoever with this NSX design.

About the AWD-
Keep in mind that the Audi R8 (the competition) has AWD, and look how good that car is. AWD can work, but weight does need to be kept down.

I think you need to do a bit more research. This car IS RWD, but has electric motors for the front wheels. NOT the mechanically driven awd in regular cars. Some are saying that the hybrid part of the car can be used at the need of the driver, meaning it doesn't have to be on if you don't want it.

Also, there are manual hybrids. Honda CR-Z.

In the end, this NSX is not heavy from what I've been reading!

Let point out a few of the problems that i see here

1. No manual transmission. A dual clulch is still a good choice though. But a manual gearbox should at least be an option. Well at least it is not a full automatic.

2. No rear wheel drive. All wheel drive adds weight to the car. And there is a decrease in fuel economy compared to two wheel drive. There is also handling to think about. All wheel drive provides grip but not necessarily driving feel. Driving feel is the whole point of the NSX. Not to mention how many all wheel drive supercars that exist these days. Unless there some part of the all wheel drive system that permits 100% of the power to the back wheels. I will consider it a problem.

3. It is a hybrid. I have never have seen a hybrid or electric in production that has a manual gearbox. One again, this technology add weight to the car. And if fuel economy is a concern why not take the same route that cars like the Lotus Elise and Chevrolet Corvette take and lose weight.

The Acura NSX is mid engined, rear wheel drive, naturally aspirated supercar I would like to see it stay that way.

I have to say I am pleasantly shocked that Honda DOES know how to design an attractive and desirable vehicle afterall.

Build this beauty AS IS ... and IMMEDIATELY infuse everything else in the lineup with this DNA. You'll be #1 in everyone's hearts again in no time.

decent design (said in the least emotional way possible). Looks like an Opel with those black-out bumper designs. Like the rest of the 3 Acura designs, this looks derivative of other maker's designs and says little about the brand except that its managed by the most incompetent staff in real auto-dom.

That Torrance facility must be a hotbed of political cluster f---s. Like Mendel, the announcers in Acura's reveal vid seem like they should have a hand up their back and a ventriloquist to their side. Enough of you, bring out the real designers... someone who talks about cars with a passion.

Christ's sake...get rid of the stupid beak/gullotine grille already. It doesn't work on any current Acuras, it doesn't work here, and it will never work.

Here you have a car that's almost attractive, and then you put the stupid grille on the front and ruin it. Acura's so willing to use the gullotine that you'd think they made cars during the French Revolution.

Yes that thing just looks gastly, and the engines! All their engines have less hp compared to 10 years ago, and the hp to weight ratio is worse even compared to 20 years ago.

The engine in the last Type-r euro civic has 200 hp, same engine put out 212 hp 10 years ago in the civic. And the Type-s accord also puts out 200 hp compared to 210 13 years ago.

And here they dont even sell type-r anymore since 2010. They think the "mighty" civic GT with 140 hp 1.8 litre is a high performance car, what a joke.

If Honda of before 2005 existed today we would see 250 hp K20A civics and 400 hp NA 3.4 litre V6 NSX with low weight.

Honda, offer the V10 you had developed for the HSV that ran in the Super GT series and also offer the boring hybrid powertrain. You'd make Ayrton Senna proud with the V10 and the suspension handling Senna helped tune in the original NSX.

Okay... The NSX was pretty much underpowered and still one of the best there ever was. So, if for some reason Honda does it again, hybrid system and all, then what? Suddenly all those naysayers will be cheering in joy.

I do think this New NSX may make some believe that Hybrids are not inherently boring. Given the climate of "Fuel economy is king" and even Honda's goal to be the most Fuel efficient they can be, as still making a top drawer sports car, a hybrid system is to be expected. Now if it is geared for performance, aiding in acceleration, not just better F/econ, then what?

The myths will start to fly that only Asians can make good hybrid systems?

Then Detroit fought back and has been for quite a while (See the rest of the Auto Show).

I agree. Honda died with me with the lamest attempt of a redesign I have ever seen which became the 9th generation Civic.

They needed this years ago. But not only is it too late but its too tame- while I think it is handsome looking it is not the invigoration that Acura desperately needs right now. The fact that they kept the beak front end goes to show how out of tune they are with this fact.

the color of the lamps (both head&rear) as well as the position of the side moirrors gave away which end was actually front and which back! weird and odd to me..... not that this is particularly bad looking, it`s just, well it`s not an NSX to me, honda/acura could have (and should have) very well used the basic formula of the first one instead, it still carries more than enough potential to it, to have it a fresh new 21st century contemporary model yet while retaining the heritage without running the risk of coming across as simply being a boring warm-over . can't please all of us of course, that`s for sure but honda once was my favorite japanese brand (i owned a '91 CRX , driven a '98 civic and a '95 delSol ). neat and agile little machine´s they were with not to many problems, certainly fun, but those days are long gone and it looks like honda has left this path for good. haven't shown interest in a honda product since the S2000 as the very last.
