The ink has yet to dry on Acura’s press release concerning its mid-cycle update for the 2011 RL flagship sedan, but already talks are starting suggesting that a more worthy update is on the way in the near future.
From a sales standpoint, the generation RL that started with the 2005 model year has dwindled significantly from its peak, managing a meager 3,000 units sold for the year. For 2011, the changes act as a mid-cycle refresh to help maintain sales while a fitting successor is prepared as the engine was retained, a gear added to the transmission and minor cosmetic and feature tweaks were updated as well.
Now, according to the folks at Car and Driver, Acura representatives have coughed up the suggestion that a proper redesign is well underway, and likely just one to one and a half years from hitting the market.
If that weren’t welcome enough news for Acura enthusiasts, C&D also managed to get unofficial confirmation that some sort of new, “unconventional” model is on the table as well. Given that the conventional approach for Acura right now seems to be conservative and luxury only, something with a dose of sport appeal might be exactly what the doctor ordered.
