There was a point when executives at Acura decided they wanted to make a deliberate and pointed move upscale and upmarket, which meant an entry-level hatchback popular with the young racing crowd had to go, and it did in 2006.
But now, as Acura appears to be giving up its desires to move away from the same segments in which Cadillac, Infiniti, Lincoln and Lexus compete in, and it may even reintroduce the RSX hatchback as a result, say Motor Trend sources.
At this point the details are quite sketchy, with some suggestions that Acura has already begun development of such a vehicle and that it would make use of the Honda Civic Si’s 201 horsepower i-VTEC 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine. But if Acura wants the RSX to be taken seriously, the Civic Si’s engine would likely do as a base engine, but only if a second, more powerful offering was also on tap.
Other technical specifications are still in the dark, but it is suggested that the car will employ a very wedge-like shape, not terribly unlike the Cadillac CTS coupe, and in a sense, not far off from the general shape – plus some additional hard lines – of the final generation RSX.
With Japan in the condition that it is as a result of the earthquake and tsunami, however, don’t expect a car like this to get any fast-track treatment anytime soon.
