2009 Acura TL pricing announced

Acura has released pricing for the all-new 2009 TL and TL SH-AWD, which will be in dealers Sept. 24 and November, respectively. Starting at $34,995 for the base model TL, the Technology Package will bump that bottom line up to $38,685. Adding all-wheel-drive and an extra 0.2 liters to the V6, the TL SH-AWD will start at $38,505. The Technology Package-equipped TL SH-AWD runs $42,235. Finally, a TL SH-AWD with the Technology Package and available 19 inch wheels tops out at $43,235.

Those prices don’t include a $760 destination charge.

For comparison, the 2008 TL started at $33,725 (featuring a 3.2 liter V6 compared to the 3.5 liter in the 2009) and a fully-equipped Technology Package/performance tires Type-S (which did not include all-wheel-drive) topped out at $38,425. The destination charge has also increased from $670.

The redesigned 2009 Acura TL will arrive in showrooms this fall. The luxury sedan will be available in two distinctive versions including the first ever application of ‘Super Handling All-Wheel Drive’ (SH-AWD) on the TL.

The TL will continue Acura’s new design language seen on the redesigned TSX and RL, featuring a bold front grille treatment. Outback, the TL looks to have an Accord-inspired rear fascia, but its design is rather exaggerated and could polarize some potential customers.

The TL’s interior is less controversial and features several arches in its design language.

As previously reported, the new TL will be available in two guises: a base front-wheel drive car and an up-level all-wheel drive model. The front-driver will be powered by a 285 horsepower 3.5L V6 whereas the AWD model will receive its motivation from a 3.7L V6 producing 305 horsepower. Both models will use a five-speed automatic transmission.

Despite boasting 305 horsepower and all-wheel drive, the range-topping model will not sport the Type-S nameplate but will be distinguished by quad exhaust. In fact, Acura will not offer a Type-S model, at least not in 2009. It remains unclear if the performance model will eventually join the lineup.

Leftlane had a chance to sample both the standard TL and the TL SH-AWD in August.

A bucktoothed fat kid with wheels better suited for moving air in floor fans. I like Acuras, but between the Maxima and G35, I find little Acura can offer me with this TL. This is coming from someone that still lusts after the great looks of the old TL. The TSX needs to be about 28 loaded and TL 35 loaded to be a sales success.

Great looking interior (from the pics) but a sinful exterior. Lead designer needs to take some art classes. Why does Honda have better design cues versus its “upscale” sibling? Front grill is a fiasco — just like what Subaru did when it paid hommage to its airplane roots. See how quickly that design was changed? Hope the same happens with the Acura “signature” grill right now. Awful.

Pricing? Agree with the statement above. Acura is stretching itself with its current pricing scheme. And with a soft economy … I don’t care if it’s a new model change, this will be a hard sale.

As an Honda fan, I think the G or even the Maxima to be a better looking car … TL is a disgrace, based upon photos. I hope it’ll look better in person (but I doubt it). No doubt the interior will be top notch for its class (if there’s a silver lining to all of this …).

You guys are absolutely right - this new design language is not working for me (29 male and has loved hondas since I was 6)

43k for a TL? They have got to be kidding. I know 10 years ago the TL was about 32k and i guess inflation is part of this but geez….that’s tough to swallow considering the same job position didn’t grow 25% in saalary in the past 10 years.

Acura needs to find a theme and stick to it. I thought the last gen TL/TSX was exactly what they needed…sporty/elegant styling in an awesome price pkg.

It still baffles me how they could take possibly the cleanest and most purposeful design to come out of a Honda studio since the NSX and turn it into this. I can foresee many an owner of the now previous generation walking into the showroom when their lease expires and either paying out the residual or, if they insist on staying within the Honda family, even downgrading into an Accord. And it’s not just the grill, the rest of the car now looks like some generic, bulbous lump that even Kiundai might have thought twice about.

too much money for the AWD model. People are not looking to pay $44k for a TL, especially when it looks like that. I bet 80% will be the FWD model because of the price. A $5k jump in one model year is ridiculous.

Too much money, I don’t care how much technology it has. The engine is still turned the wrong way for a car in this price range, and its just plain fugly. For that kind of scratch there are soooo many better looking and performing cars. Maybe they don’t have the toys, but frankly, when I spend this kind of money on a car I want to walk up to it with pride and I want to drive it, not it drive me. I don’t need bluetooth or nav, or voice command anything. I can read a map, and if I’m having fun driving, I don’t want to be talking to my wife…

34K for V6 Acura then who would want to buy the genesis V6 for 33K. Hyundai is very good in marketing for their new Genesis line up. I think the pricing is right for this this for this TL. I would buy it…

G35X with NAV can be had for 37K with the RWD and the very responsive V6….. the TL is a stretch…. I bet the 09 G37 sedan would be cheaper than this with more fun and more horses ….. dumb pricing…. agree with most of you guys on this one!

I’m not feeling it. The rear end looks a little busy and it’s so gaudy. I still really like the previous gen TL, that was a great looking car. Talk about ruining a good thing.

Pricing: $43k for a TL, you’re now in 335i territory. Good luck Acura.

So basically, they’re charging about $4k more for the AWD and slight increase in displacement. That’s a bit steep for Acura to be asking. I own a 2000 TL and was waiting until this generation to replace my car but I wouldn’t take at that price; maybe if I got $4k-5k off would I consider. Otherwise, I think the new Infiniti G37x sedan (with new 7 speed transmission) makes more sense at that price. And why is Honda still stuck on a 5 speed? A 6 or 7 speed could yield equal or better performanc with a increase in fuel economy.

If I remember correctly, I bought my loaded ‘03 TL Type-S for the price that this one /starts/ at! And now all the way up to $43K? Sweet Grandmother’s spatula!

The only original bit about this design is that buck-tooth, Bugs Bunny Grille. Everything else can be traced to Nissan, really. Like a huge, deluxe version of the last Maxima.

People are buying the 38K based MDX, so they will buy a 38K TL.

Stop bitching just because it ain’t you buying it.

the pricing of this car is going to make the TL fail, while the economy is in a hole. I bought the TL-S two years ago and was waiting on this one, but going to stay with 07 TL-S. Sure the car my be a little funner to drive…but the gas epa isn’t good. the rear is GIANT. and the Grill is not really working for me. i been looking at the TSX AND RL grill and it is not working. Now, the interior of this car looks better. When all is said and done, i’ll pass on this TL, and wait on the next one after this failure.

@anti-believer: so were you making the argument last year that “people are buying a $30K Mustang, so they will buy a $30K Five Hundred?” Ain’t too smart.
