Well I don't necesarrily think any Acura sedans (mainly the RL) will need a V8. I think they can get by on the current V6.
What I think Acura needs a V8 for is for the MDX.

And Honda NEEDS to put a V8 in the Pilot and Ridgeline.

Try as they may, but it'll never be as smooth, powerful or reliable as a good ol GM V8. Honda is going to fall victim to the American Revolution in the next couple of years so I doubt very well they will have the money or the ability to even produce such a motor.

Autonut & Veda hit it. Gas will be $4+ a gallon eventually in every part of the country. I know the argument comes up that if you can afford the car/vehicle you can afford the gas, and should be able to get and drive what you want to, which is true. But from what I've seen where I work, the same people that have ALL that money and the $60k BMWs and big-V8 SUVs are the same ones that sneak into seminars and grab a free lunch and walk out, and steal office supplies. Just an observation that everyone, even Warren Buffett and Bill Gates, want something for nothing, whether they have a wad of hundreds in their pocket or not. Wow, odd rant there, sorry about that guys. I'd better get some coffee..

Funny didn't Honda have an all out IRL domination that forced GM out of the series. And isn't it strange that Audis past DTM program used Honda derived V8's.. makes ya think.

Let's get real shall we, how many of you guys actually own a sedan with a V8 right now? SUV's with V8's is a different matter since depending on the usage it may be a requirement. V8 is indeed a symbol of luxury and image-wise it is a good addition in a more upscale brand, but with the recent gas prices and V6's already reaching 300+ HP, I wonder if they are required at all. That's not to mention you can't cruise for more than 85mph without risking a ticket. Of course there is exceptions such as the efficient V8 in the Audi S5. Same 0-60 but better mpg than the Jag XKR.

I am not sure that Acura needs V8 or V10 NOW or later. Perhaps it was needed 10-15 years ago. But with price of gas climbing over $4/gallon in some part of the country this is a luxury they don't need. We have M-B jumping on hybrid bandwagon with V6 based S class. Ditto BMW. Actually Germans always offered diesels in their top level autos and it was most successful high class product in luxury for most of the world. There are lot of S class Benzes on streets of Europe with V^ diesels in them. Same for 7 and 5 series(I6 diesels) and Audi 8.
The RWD argument is strong only West Coast and South. In Chicago and Boston during winter you need FWD or better yet AWD. And all German manufacturers oblige with AWD (OK 7 series does not have AWD). I think it is more cost effective to turbo charge V6 which usually does not tax efficiency, develop direct injection along with turbo and leave RL (or give it a better name) AWD. With cylinder deactivation Honda can have "green" luxury that handles well out of the box.

Acura as well as Honda do need a V8 desperately, How many Ridgelines are we seeing now-a-days people? I saw like 100 the first couple months they came out and now I rarely see them, A V6 doesn't cut it for towing, just as I've never seen a Ridgeline towing anything heavier then a couple jet skis. I wouldn't necessarily call Acura underpowered. Maybe to it's competition, but I think the TL certainly has enough horsepower for its class. But yeah for the MDX and Ridgeline, those need V8 options if they want to really compete.

inally somebody woke up, FWD is a joke.
V6 or V8 no matter if its rwd it will be way better then the front heavy crap they sell now. If there smart they'll balls up mount the tranny at rear axle and go back to the double-wishbone frnt.

That is 100 % right.

Go to any Honda forum ... people have been screaming for a V8 since the NSX first appeared. But Honda's founder has been a big proponent of saving the environment and not make unnecessary "big" engines. It has worked for a while but in this day and age, you have to have bigger HP/TQ numbers to get people talking about your car and into the showroom.

It's a shame, too. Honda engineers great cars but the engines (the bread and butter of this company) doesn't quite compete with the other makes. I suppose the other manufacturers will be grounded once CAFE rules come into effect. Honda looks like they are coasting their way with their current line up, making good profits (#2 in Japan in size) and happy with what they have. Very weird philosophy.

Finally it seems like they're starting to wake the fuck up. Acura seems to be in a state of disarray producing bland, anemic vehicles. Hopefully its a sign that there's more changes on the way, maybe then they'll get me back as a customer...

well look at the MB 320 E class and the lower 5 series models like the 525 or now 528 Very low hp and heavy on top of that
LOL @ going straight for the high performance
Look at any current RL the resale is still there and up there with the Japanese and German comp and much more than its american "comp" if you can call anything from american car co's competition

Z06ified,
1115 is more than capable of speaking for himself, but I believe the "overpriced and underpowered" comment was leveled at the German sedans that historically competed at the RL pricepoint.... in which case, I'd agree. One can easily option a 3-series close to the sticker of an RL, let alone a 5-series....

That's a good point, rsg, Honda certainly has V8 know-how, and LLN (actually) makes a point about Honda having V10 knowledge. It's interesting that Honda is more about keeping up with the Joneses, instead of one-upmanship. I wonder if the new U.S. CAFE and Euro emissions regs. nixed any plans for a cylinder deactivation V10....

""True" luxury cars are overpriced and underpowered just look at the BMW or Benz offerings

Overpriced? Perhaps. Underpowered? I would hardly call the 500hp BMW M5 and 507hp MB AMG E63 underpowered!

Right now, Acura has the most underpowered luxury lineup of any brand (except for Lincoln and Saab).

"Acura's are worth every penny and have great resale"

Uh, not all Acuras have good resale. The RL has pretty poor resale value. The TL has good resale because it is basically an Accord, and the TSX is a Euro-spec Accord.

It's strange that Honda is so against the V8 in passenegr cars considering they are are the sole provider to Indycar of their Honda badged V8 engines. Anyway, the new grille is hideous.

"True" luxury cars are overpriced and underpowered just look at the BMW or Benz offerings They are also troublesome and expensive to repair
Acura's are worth every penny and have great resale and reliability along with a fun to drive spirit
Rear drive isnt a great feature in all parts of the country but SH AWD is
That rendering is how I think Acura meant to make the 09 RL
The advanced concept is not really a preview bc remember the comcept rdx looks nothing like the production model (thank god lol)

It is about time Honda. True luxury cars are RWD with eight cylinders or more. Acura's current offerings are pretty much Accords with standard leather and a few gadgets.
