Acura wants to add V8s to lineup

12/11/2006, 9:46 AM

By admin

The Acura division is pushing Honda management to approve development of a V8 powerplant for its luxury lineup, according to Automotive News. Honda R&D boss Hirohide Ikeno said he’s encouraging top executives to give the green light.

“I’m pushing for it,” he said. “That is our direction.” Acura is often criticized for not offering V8 engines with any of its cars. Ikeno said V8s are only being considered for Acura, and none would appear in the Honda lineup. The next-generation NSX sports car is expected to feature a V10.

It is good news. Just make it big enough to have some good torque down low.

Oh, they’ll put up a small-block Chevy V-8 shrine in the development lab.

They will make an engine light years ahead, but the bore and stroke will be SAE rewritten in metric.

I am sure they have a few patents on the walls in Engineering, but, besides CVCC, what ‘new’ has Honda ever introduced to market???

Doesn’t this contradict the “green” image they portray in the media? I thought Honda wasn’t about gas-guzzling V8s. Hmmm….interesting.

@chevy490: I hear ya. God forbid the Acadia Denali have a V8, but man if Honda wants one, it’s all good.

90Z –I think the green image Honda wants now is this kind of green — $$$$$

Can’t sell premium sedans w/out at least the option of the V8.

Honda may be one of the best engine manufacturers out there, along with BMW.

Formula 1 is a great test bed.

This is good. Maybe Acura can become more than just a “Bit player” in a field of BMW’s, Benzes, Lexii and Infiniti’s with the intro of a real V8.

Because right now, there is Zero reason for anyone to buy a near 50k RL flagship when the 35k TL is a better car. And displacement is supposedly around 4.0l so gas consumption should be reasonable… I hope.

The RL should have had a V8 since day one. When compared to my TL, the RL is, naturally, more luxurious and slightly better equipped but when I saw the sticker on the RL I almost died laughing. No wonder they’re not selling as well as Acura thought it would.

90z, Acura delivering a v8 engine in no way contradicting it’s “green” image. A v8 can be made more fuel efficient, just like a 4 or 6 cylinder can. I would love to see a small v8 make the same kind of horsepower/Liter the Honda K-series engine can…..a 400 hp 4 liter v8 would seem very possible.

Maybe they can do it with one of those patents on the wall!

Realistically, Acura needs to compete in a different market than Honda. This means they need comparable models to other luxury vehicles. A few years ago, Honda could make v8 power with a 6 cylinder. As the competition’s technology improves Honda needs to move forward as well. Sure, they could make a more powerful 6 cylinder, but that may not be as reliable and cost effective as v8 developoment.

You also have to keep in mind, that although Honda’s “green” image has all their vehicles rated as a LEV, While the consumer may want low emissions, the guy buying the 60k car is not quite as concerned about fuel prices, than the guy buying the civic.

even with a V8, acura doesnt have the name to compete with the big players such as the BMW’s and Benzes.

I disagree, Honda is capable of producing any car it wants too. If it wants to make a V8 sedan that can blow the doors off a Bimmer, it will. Their name is pretty well respected even if they lost their way in the early part of this decade.

Hopefully, it will do the right thing and make true V8 RWD performance sedan just like Infinti, and BMW; and not a mushmobile like a Lexus.

Honda is one of, if not the, most successful racing companies. That is what they all about. It is exciting that they are going to build a V8. No doubt it will be a screamer.

That seems plain out wrong unless they have no plans on selling it in any other countries, cause Acura kinda doesn’t exist.

the beauty of Sh-AWD is that it will split torque wherever the torque is needed, with superior handling as its so-called bias. High-speed wide-angled corners will benefit from more outer-front power and low speed tight corners will benefit from rear-inner power, which is a tough feat only mitsubishi, nissan, and now honda have managed to implement into their flagship differentials. Good job honda on the v8, now make it rev to 8k, give it square cylinders and 100hp/l… please.

Offer only RWD and SH-AWD for all their lines then they can probably compete with the Germans. But even now they’re selling alright so I guess Honda doesn’t care much…

So if Acura is pushing for V8’s and rear wheel drive for the RL, with perhaps a V6 rear drive for the TL, I can then logically expect that the Honda lineup will begin to feature turbochargers and RWD/AWD for their S, Si and Type-R models……. right Honda?

I mean, it only makes sense that if the company is finally starting to consider their image and profitability in luxury and performance, what we see happening on one side *should* appear in a different way on the other.

…because it only makes *sense* to even think that Honda/Acura is changing all around… right?

^^^ My thoughts exactly. With the last discussion about the new Accord being designed, all I could think is RWD… not necessarily for the Accord itself, but for the Acura lineup basd on the Accord. This is all making sense…. hmmmm

ahahaha. I can’t see a market big enough to develop a RWD car, and a FWD V8 I’m sure would go over like a fart in church.. They gotta do something though, Honda and acura sales by model are shaky, save for the CRV, the MDX and the RDX lmao.
