Roewe News

After losing Rover, Shanghai Auto dubs brand “Roewe”

Having failed to acquire the Rover brand name from BMW due to a last-minute intervention by Ford, Chinese carmaker Shanghai Auto has decided to sell its cars under a new name — “Roewe” in English-speaking markets, and “Rong Wei” (Grand Prestige) in China.

The company will go ahead with its Rover-inspired exterior designs, and the Roewe logo looks very similar to Rover’s famous badge. The first Roewe will be called 750E, based on the Rover 75.

“Rong Wei”?! Do you think they know how that sounds in english? It’s a good thing they changed it to Rowe. Otherwise it would have been the worst international car name blunder since sending the Nova (name unchanged) to Latin America.

That Nova thing is an urban legend btw. The word “Nova” means the same both in English and in Spanish. “No va” on the other translated roughly to something like “does not go”.

Rong wei. Pfft.

and people wonder why we need to do something about chinese disdain for intellectual property.

they are cheap-labor ripoff artists, pure and simple.

Wrong Way Motorcars is just another example of it.

by the way, boycott the “MG” that will be coming out, as well. and no, i don’t care if it’s assembled in Iowa of chinese parts.

Yeah the chinese really need to be put in their place when it comes to riping of brands. Other people put in the hard work and then they neutralize this work by bringing out cheap imitations. I’d say boycot ripoff cars.

The japs started that trend a long time ago. Look at them now…

They can’t come up with anything original, so they must copy everything.
But Rover did not do so well in sales, they should copy someone successful. How about “Wonda” or “Joyota”?

Chinese have a thing for making very odd names, or very generic names for everything. I personally dont like Roewe and dont like the cars either.

The chinese have actually had some of the greatest inventions in history; gunpowder, paper, chinese food, etc. It’s just too bad their pirated goods have become such a huge problem that people forget about their accomplishments.

How exactly is this pirated? SAIC bought the rights to MG Rover cars, but Ford exercised an option to buy the Rover name, probably because they own Land Rover and don’t want the brands to be that similar in name. Hence, SAIC had to change the brand name. Besides, wouldn’t a chinese person pronounce ‘Rover’ something more like ‘Roewe’ anyway?

“Roewe” as an English brand looks and sounds stupid.

“Rong Wei” sounds quite good in Chinese, actually, though it still sounds dumb in English.

I do like the crest though.

Joking aside, and whether this marque is legitimate or not, the intellectual property issue with China is very serious indeed. There really is no way to police the problem either.
Other than the west boycotting Chinese products in general, I don’t a solution.

This is ridiculous, and typical. I’ve seen other Chinese brands do some really lame copy designs of cars like the Honda CR-V, I’m talking carbon copy ****.

For those of you that do not know, SAIC bought the right to the rover name when MG collapsed. So technically, they have the right to do with it whatever they like.

Pretty good at copying stuff to make a quick buck. Or at least that’s the stereotype they’re reinforcing upon themselves with dumbass moves like this Rong Wei move.

Can’t wait till someone I know buys a chinese car so I can laugh at them!
