Alfa Romeo is taking advantage of the Frankfurt Motor Show to make changes to the MiTo range, including the addition of two new engines.
The first new engine is Fiat’s TwinAir. The well-known 85 horsepower turbocharged two-cylinder won the International Engine of the Year award and already powers the Fiat 500 and the Lancia/ Chrysler Ypsilon.
With a displacement of just 875cc, the TwinAir is the smallest engine ever to find its way under the hood of an Alfa Romeo. As puny as it may sound, it puts out more torque and more horsepower than the normally aspirated 1.4 liter MPI four-cylinder that currently serves as the MiTo’s entry-level engine. The two cylinder MiTo takes 12.5 seconds to reach 62 miles per hour from a stop, and goes on to a top speed of 108 miles per hour.
The second new offering is the 85 horsepower version of the 1.3 JTDm turbo diesel. Like the aforementioned TwinAir it is equipped with Start and Stop technology and gets an impressive 67 miles per gallon. For those who find 85 ponies too little, the 1.3 JTDm is already available in 95 horsepower and 120 horsepower tune.
To complement the new engines, a new exterior color called nero ametisca (amethyst black) is available along with new alloy wheels and a new cream and black two-tone interior.
The top-of-the-line MiTo Quadrifoglio Verde, powered by a 170 horsepower 1.4 MultiAir gas engine, gets revamped as well. The most notable change is the addition of Alfa’s Active Suspension, a system developed in collaboration with Magneti Marelli that modifies the suspension’s response based on road surface in order to optimize comfort.
Alfa has added new options to the Quadrifoglio Verde, including new specific 18″ alloy wheels and Sabelt seats with carbon fiber seat backs.
The refreshed MiTo lineup will be on display in Frankfurt next week and will hit showrooms in October.
