Alfa Romeo 8c Competizione to lead marque’s U.S. charge

07/24/2006, 9:44 AM

By admin

Recently, there have been a number of conflicting reports on Alfa Romeo’s much-anticipated return to the United States. Some reports have pegged the revival for late 2008, while others suggest 2010 as a more likely timeframe. It turns out both may be right. While Alfa’s three volume models won’t go on sale until late 2009 or early 2010, a high-dollar sports car may arrive at the end of 2008 to usher in a new era of the Italian marque in North America. Intended as a halo car to boost interest in the brand, the $200,000 coupe will be based on the widely-praised 8c Competizione concept, according to Automotive News.

The car will be powered by a 400 horsepower Maserati 4.2-liter V8. Alfa will sell it through the Maserati dealer network, the report said. A convertible version will arrive a year after the coupe goes on sale. A total of 1000 units will be built for the world. The U.S. is expected to get half of all units built.

Automotive News also noted that the Alfa 159 sedan will be extended by some ten inches for the U.S. market. The Spider and Brera coupe will remain unchanged, however.

That’s a beautiful car but for 200k I have so many other beautiful cars to pick from I doubt an Alfa Romeo will ever make it on my list. Seriously, what are these marketing execs thinking? Who in their right mind comes to a new market trying to gain share with a 200k product? *sigh* good luck!

Good idea i think. The car is obviously going to sell on looks alone. This car will introduce america to the brand and raise awareness of alfa romeo in america.

Straight after this you bring the other sedans and coupes. Genius

P.s. Easily the best looking car in the world including any ferrari

I really think this car is very beautiful, but not 200K’s worth. If it was in the 80K range it would definatly be a contender.

they cant sell that car for that much. they need to price it squarly at the corvette. $45k for the coupe $50k for the drop top. It uses a Maserati engine but costs as much as a Ferrari, whos idea was that??? why not put the old v8 from the 360 Modena. They would have a killer bargin priced corvette/911 killer! they couldnt build enough of them.

Hope that’s a typo. The 8C has always been quoted around $90-100k since it’s prototype showing a couple years ago. $200k is ridiculous of course, which is comparing it to the F430, Gallardo, future GT2, etc., that are far better cars.

#8 Jimbo, that Main Line tail is not going to be jumping into your uber Golf like they would that Alfa. They could care less how fast it was. You can only go so fast on the Blue Route.

I think its a smart move, rich people dont see ig difference in 100 thousand or 200, its all about the image, and since there are going to be built just 1000 i think Alfa will get what they wanted

I doubt it will cost 200K, more like 150K. Then again it is a limited production car. The car is constructed primarily of carbon fiber so it is not just some rebodied maserati coupe. I have also read that it will have more power and a different engine than just the 4.2L V8 of the Maserati.
I think this is a very good move and I was surprised when it was said the introduction wouldn’t be until 2010.

If anyone here had a clue, then they would have known that this 4.2L engine in this car is actually a maserati engine DESIGNED by Ferrari. It is also the same engine that Ferrari F430 4.3L engine is based on, just more tuned.

This car is what the Saturn SKY coupe – if they ever make one – should look like. I wish GM would pull their heads out of their own asses for a minute and take a look at this car.

Another $200k supercar to be sold in tiny numbers to a miniscule few who can afford them…Yawn…If they want to raise awareness I agree with the person who said let them make a 911/Corvette/Jag XK/M coupe contender priced between $50-100k

i agree with #6, if the car didn’t cost 200k i think that it would do great here in the us. people with that kind of money want a ferrari or something like that.

to #15: I don’t think it’s any better looking than the Sky or the Solstice, and it’s CERTAINLY not $170,000 better looking.

The 8C designation is a legendary model from their pre-war hey day when Ferrari was teh head of teh racing dept.

They will sell every one to crazy and wealthy Alfistas all over.

#23— The 8C is a million dollars better looking than the Sky. The huge turd in my toilet this morning was $170,000 better looking than the Kappa twins
