Brenda Priddy’s cameras have managed to capture the limited run Alfa 8C testing on the Nürburgring track in Germany. These photos show that the production car has had several modifications from the original concept.
As Alfa 8C Competizione takes on its role as a leading player, the combination of the exhilaration generated by its design and the pleasure of its drive clearly make Alfa Romeo stand out within its category. Comparing both, the concepts and the prototype shown here, we’re able to reveal the many modifications that will turn the show-stunner into a road-legal production car: new air-intakes, softer edges, wider A-pillars, and many more.
The car will be powered by an unprecedented 4,591 cm3, 90° eight-cylinder engine. Maximum engine performance is 450 bhp at 7000 rpm, with a peak torque of 470 Nm at 4750 rpm and top speed capacity at 7500 rpm.
With six gears and a computerized gearbox system situated behind the steering-wheel, the new 8C offers pinpoint gear response, and has been developed to be driven at Manual-Regular, Manual-Sporty, Automatic-Regular, Automatic-Sporty and Ice modes.
The 8C’s suspension and brake systems have been designed using racetrack engineering and developed technologies. The front and rear dual wishbone suspension and aluminum calipers ensure exceptional traction and braking performance. The 8C makes use of Alfa Romeo’s latest VDC technology (advanced stability and traction control systems) for best driving performance in any situation as well as guaranteed driving safety. And we’re expecting the 8C Competizione to mark Alfa’s re-entry into the U.S.-market.

The car looks substantially the same as the production. the A pillars are a little wider, but it doesn’t change the look very much. I think it looks great. Too bad it costs over 100,000. Will be cool to see Alfas on the road again in 2010. This is basically a Maserati styled by Alfa Romeo.

i`m sure the interior will be pretty nice, sitting on side of the road waiting for a tow truck you need to be comfortable rite?
seriously though i would like to see this on our side of the pond, nothing wrong with variety.

Well, everybody is entitled to have their own opinion, but about relaibility, when you see the criticism that most of the american cars get over here, I wouldn’t say that italin cars are that unreliable. As for the rest, it will surely have a fabulous engine, nothing like american push rods, which are seen here as somewhat prehistoric pieces of junk, that burn as much fuel as a small truck, keep in mind that all commercial vehicles are diesel over here in Europe.

Exactly Veda,
Its all about STYLE - which going on the comments is something lots of you know nothing about
viper has no style, only braun.
Vette has a touch of style, but not alot.
599 and especially the 8C have style aplenty. I cannot think of a single GM product that has STYLE and panache like this 8C has.
It’s like stating that a beautiful Georgian 4 bedroom house isn’t worth the money since you can buy a 5 sleeper trailer on a trailer park for a fraction of the price. You kids really come out with some bull sometimes….

Alfa Romeo has a rich heritage and it shows in the styling of the new models. I hope the quality is now up to date with the Germans. The recent Alfas looked so good that Audi poached its designer Wolfgang Eggert from Alfa Centro Stile.

WOW GUYS NOBODY SAID IT DID NOT HAVE STYLE ITS GORGEOUS, THE POINT WAS THE ENTIRE AUTO INDUSTRY IS OUT OF IDEAS THAT DONT ACCIDENTLY LOOK SIMILAR IN ONE WAY OR ANOTHER. OF ALL THE CAR PLATFORMS I LIKE FR COUPES THE BEST, AND ACTUALLY THIS IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL OF THE BUNCH.
IT WAS JUST A CONVERSATION STARTER NOT AN ATTACK ON THE CAR. AND TO THE PUSHROD DUDE, NOT EVERY SINGLE GM CAR HAS PUSHRODS, AND NOT EVERY CAR GETS TRUCK MILEAGE SO LETS NOT START A STUPID FLAME WAR OVER DESIGN LANGUAGE, AND THE TOW TRUCK COMMENT WAS A JOKE. JEEZ PULL YOUR PANTIES FROM YOUR CRACKS AND LIGHTEN UP.

CTS DRIVER, I didn’t mean to offend anyone with the pushrod remark, the thing is that to get the same power from a pushrod engine you need a larger engine and, by definition one that burns more fuel, I was especially talking about the Corvette and the Large SUV’s. I think that for SUVS and pick-ups diesel engines should be mandatory worldwide to reduce fuel consumptions and hus CO2 emissions. As for the rest, I know that boht the High feature and the Northsatar are DOHC engines, and I jsut don’t see why GM doesn’t use them in all cars instead, before coming back to the USA, Alfa will discard its variants of the HF V6 and replace them with a new indigenous one, since this engine was badly considered among Alfisti.

spud — the Ferrari 599GTB and this new Alfa 8C are beautiful, no doubt.. but it is hard to deny the styling resemblances to the Toyota Supra (599) and Mazda MX-3 and RX-7 (8C). Ironic that affordable Japanese cars used to emulate expensive European vehicles, now the tables seem to have turned.

Well, the car it emulates the most are Alfa’s from old, in which probably the japanese took inspiration, italians have been making fastback coupés for long, there are some other european examples as well, but Alfa has has the 33 stradale, the TZ, the Montreal, some of independent coach builders, Lancia has had them too, SAAB as well, but I do agree that car design comes up with these circular ideas from time to time.

First off, the Alfa is gorgeous. I think it’s the most original looking design in a long while. Even the newer Ferraris are looking dated…just look at the 599 - it looks incredibly uninspired. The Alfa seems much more likely to turn heads.
Now, anyone bashing pushrods needs to take a more balanced look at the engine technology. Yes, they are bulkier but they are also torquier in their nature. Furthermore, they are not necessarily fuel-hungry. One of my good friends has an 06 Corvette [non-Z06] with the LS2 engine [6.0l] putting out 400 horsepower. On the highway, he averages 26 mpg [EPA rating: 27 mpg]. I drive a 2000 Nissan Altima, with a 155 hp 2.5l engine. First off, my car has notably lower specific output [horsepower per liter] and my car’s engine is DOHC [the most common alternative to pushrods]. My car gets 27 miles per gallon on the highway [EPA rating: 28]. The Corvette has a curb weight of ~3100lbs to my Altima’s ~2900lbs.
Yes, they are different types of cars. However, your argument, Eurolion and others, is that it is a dead technology. Comparing the numbers of the Corvette’s engine to a more “modern” technology, such as that used in a fairly recent-model Japanese compact car show that the results actually favor the Corvette. The Corvette gets about the same mileage as my car and it produces ~250 more horsepower. If I were to compare the numbers to the Z06, which comes with the LS7, I think the numbers would be even more in favor of the Corvette. However, I have no real-world numbers on that.
Before you get on your pedestal and start ripping on different types of engineering, please actually research before you make it apparent how ignorant you are. By saying that the Corvette “burns as much fuel as a small truck” when a real-world Corvette driver can get 26 mpg and the EPA can rate it at 27 mpg. Show me a small truck with that kind of mileage while putting out 400 hp and I frankly will be very impressed.
Long story short: Don’t pretend to know what you are talking about when you don’t have an iota of truth in your statement. Thank you.
