While the Mi.To is due to start selling in Italy later on this year, Alfa Romeo is already planning a high-performance version of the sexy compact car. The hot hatch should be released next summer, and feature a 230-horsepower engine driving the front wheels.
To achieve its lofty output, the small, 1.75-liter engine will feature direct injection, variable valve timing, and a turbocharger, as per a Channel 4 report. The hot hatch will wear a GTA badge like other fast Alfas of the past, and the Italian automaker claims it will be the most powerful car in its class, outgunning the Mini Cooper S and its Works edition by at least 22 horsepower.
The 1.75L engine represents a retro throwback, as a four-cylinder engine of the same displacement was used in Alfa’s Romeo Giulia and Giuliettas of the 1960s.

Alfa got its second wind lately. 1750 in Alfetta of ‘70 was definitely blast to drive. There is no doubt that the next gen will be anything less, if only their quality will be on par with their performance and handling.
You got it, Xyunya. Alfa’s ad slogan should be
“drives like it’s Made In Italy, built like it’s Made In China”
That is insane power per liter. Wonder how many RPM it will max at?
Hey it would be the closest thing for me driving a 8c… Haha sorta?
Won’t you guys shut up!!! If you were following the marque then you would realised that the quality has picked up considerably and the dealership is better, so it won’t be a question of will the quality be on par with the performance. Forget the past dammit!!
^ Agreed Mclaren19p. Just try telling that to all the U.S. auto maker haters out there too…
I’m excited for the Alfa’s return. BRING IT, BIATCH!
It is hard to follow Alfa from states. Even when you land in Europe, it is not the car that often rented out (never in my experience). And when you ask why they are not in rental fleets, managers shrug their shoulders and mention that it is for the same reason it is not sold in US at all.
I drove my wife’s cousin 159 and was impressed, but that car was not used and abused the way we do it in US. It was more of a weekend/vacation ride. They did not use it during week at all.
Direct Injection + Turbocharging = The Future
I believe this is Alfa’s rendition of GM’s ECOTEC LNF engine. GM is also considering bringing a 1.4L version to the U.S.
Last Alfa I had was a 156, and I’m sorry to say that it was every bit as badly built as the stereotype, it was also an understeery little bitch. When I bought my last car I was tempted by the new spider, which was a much better drive, but it’ll be a while before I trust Alfa again.
