Previous rumors indicated Fiat’s Abarth performance brand was developing a new two-seater based on the KTM X-Bow, but apparently a few wires got crossed during the reporting process. One of Fiat’s brands is developing an X-Bow-based vehicle, but it isn’t Abarth.

Fiat’s Alfa Romeo sports car brand will debut a new concept car based on the X-Bow at March’s Geneva Motor Show. Dubbed the 4C GTA, the concept car is expected to make production by the fourth quarter of 2012.

Positioned as an obtainable halo car, the 4C GTA is targeting a $55,000 price point. The 4C will mark Alfa’s first affordable rear-wheel drive sports car since the Duetto Spider ended production in 1994.

Alfa Romeo produced the rear-wheel drive 8C Competizione between 2007-08, but its six-figure price tag and limited production relegated it to the garages of the super wealthy.

Thanks to its X-Bow underpinnings, the 4C GTA will tip the scales at just under 1,800 pounds, ensuring it’ll be a star performer in all categories. Straight-line speed will be taken care of by a 250+ horsepower 1.8L engine, giving the 4C a better power-to-weight ratio than the Porsche Cayman S.

If all goes according to plan, Alfa Romeo will begin production of the 4C GTA in late 2012 with annual production expected in the 20,000-25,000 unit range. However, Alfa Romeo has already experienced “delays in the concept model construction”, so it remains possible that the rear-engine coupe won’t even be on-hand at the Geneva show.
