All Mercedes SUVs to feature diesel option for MY2008

09/25/2006, 5:01 PM

By admin

Mercedes-Benz today said all of its 2008 model year SUVs will be offered with Bluetec diesel engines in the United States. This includes all M-, GL-, and R-Class models. The automaker has had some difficulty obtaining EPA certification for its new diesels, with the E320 Bluetec sedan failing to meet new strict emissions standards in California and other states. Mercedes says its engines will meet the requirements for the 2008 model year, though it didn’t say which ones would be offered. The 3.0-liter six-cylinder Bluetec is a near certainty, and the automaker’s 4.0-liter V8 could conceivably be imported as well. We suspect further details will be announced at an upcoming American auto show.

The low-sulfur diesel should be coming this fall, but I feel it’s *somehow* going to be delayed, again. :-|

Thomas, the MB Bluetec is an ultra-low sulfur deisel engine (current deisel IS ALREADY low sulfur), but the EPA dragging its feet on Urea as a solution does hurt these engines.

MY 2008 MB vehicles use AdBlue (Urea tank) to further reduce NOx emissions as mandated by EPA Tier 2 Bin 5 emission requirements. But the engines run fine without Urea and this is what the battle/delay is really all about: how to enforce consumers to refresh their Urea tanks when it is not mandatory to do so.

Honda may have a better solution but that’s still in the lab – at least MB’s solution is in use currently with many of the larger European trucking fleets.
