Apple co-founder to drive hydrogen Hummer to south pole

08/11/2006, 12:29 PM

By admin

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak is planning to drive a Hummer H1 powered by hydrogen fuel cells from the McMurdo Station in Ross Island, Antarctica, to the South Pole. ‘Woz’ made the announcement at Stanford’s AlwaysOn Conference in late July. His vehicle will be co-piloted by Buzz Aldrin, the former astronaut who walked on the moon in 1969. The trip will be part of a research expedition slated for December 2007. The expedition is to be filmed in 3D for the director James Cameorn.

WHats the point of this? THat some rich computer guy and the first man on the moon are gonna drive a Hummer that has gained a conscience and has ridded itself of its gas guzzling motor to drive over the ice using fuel cells? It says for research….sounds more to me like a research in 3D filming.

wait… won’t the temperature be a problem for the hydrogen fuel cell (I want an answer not banging, I don’t need people banging on me as I am not an expert on hydrogen or anything)

I would do it in a UNIMOG, not a Hummer H1

Don’t know what a UNIMOG is?

They eat Hummers for breakfast.

I want to go! I want to go! I just want to sit in the back seat and listen to these two legends talk as they navigate icy terrain.

This is something that has many reasons. Number 1: raise awareness for hydrogen fuel cell technology. Number 2: James Cameron with new film technology. ‘Nuff said there. Number 3: C’mon, it’s Woz and Buzz. That’s reason enough. If they want to do something, you let ‘em.

I hate to sound like a fanboy, but for these two, I’ll take that moniker.

Mog, Pinz, HMMWV, Defender series, G-wagon, that toyota HMMWV ripoff, hell, even some of the GAZ products, LM002, and a few others I can’t think of at the moment…

I’d trust any of them to get the job done.

Fuel cells show the greatest promise to convert from reciprocating pistons to electric motors. Instead of large heavy acid-filled batteries, the vehicle carries fuel which converted directly into elecricity. Even with fossil fuels, they are pollution-free potentially much more efficient. Using hydrogen as a fuel, these vehicles would have the added benefit of generating zero greenhouse gases.

Congratulations to Buzz Aldrin. Congratulations to the Woz. Congratulations to James Cameron.

Yeah. Hydrogen. Big Deal. It takes 25 times as many trucks to deliver the energy equivelent of gasoline ot stations across the USA, so hydrogen is a big energy guzzler. This doesn’t include the energy required to convert the water into the hydrogen molecules. Pure PR hype in my book.

Too bad they have an H3 pictured rather than an H1…it would make sense to have a picture of what the conversation is about…but, anyway…
