April Sales Numbers

05/01/2007, 12:52 PM

By ndhapple

Posted below the jump are the April sales numbers for the major European, American and Japanese automakers. It will be updated as each company reports.

UPDATE: Below the jump results from GM, Ford, Chrysler, Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Mercedes and BMW/Mini.

General Motors: Down 9 Percent

GM saw retail sales increase by nearly 4 percent for April but it couldn’t offset a decline of 9 percent overall, Marketwatch.com reported. GM said car sales declined by 10 percent and truck sales were down 9 percent. The automaker said it had cut fleet sales by more than a third during the April selling period which contributed to the sales decline.

Ford: Down 13 Percent

Ford saw car sales slump 23.6 percent with truck sales declined 5.8 percent. Ford’s retail sales were off 17 percent and fleet sales were also down 5 percent. Analysts expected a decline of more than 20% due to fewer selling days marketwatch.com reported

Chrysler Group: Up 1.6 Percent

Marketwatch.com reported the Chrysler Group saw car sales fall 20 percent in April but an 11 percent upswing truck sales allowed it to post a small gain for the month. Chrysler was running a tremendous amount of advertising and incentives on its Dodge Trucks this month, call it Truck Month at your local Dodge dealer. Minivan sales were also up for Chrysler with the Town and Country posting a 24 percent sales increase.

    Chrysler Group by brand:

    Chrysler: Up 7 percent

    Dodge: Up 2 percent

    Jeep: Up 40 percent

Toyota USA: Down 4.3 Percent
Marketwatch.com reported Toyota posted a sales decline of nearly 10,000 units compared to this time last year, which Toyota blames on two fewer selling days in April. They said that had they had those extra days, they would have increased sales by 3.7 percent.

Honda USA: Down 9.1 percent
Honda posted weaker sales for both its car and truck divisions in the April selling period marketwatch.com reported. Car sales were down 14.1 percent and truck sales were down 2.6 percent. Acura sales fell about 15 percent according to Honda’s press release.

Nissan: Down 18 percent
Nissan reported perhaps the worst numbers of any automaker in April with total sales down 18 percent, marketwatch.com reported. The Nissan brand posted a 21 percent sales decline, while Infinity posted a 3.4 percent sales increase compared to April of last year.

BMW: Up 0.5 percent
BMW posted month to month and year to date sales that surpassed both measures at this time in 2006. The sales increases were based on BMW car sales increasing 10.1 percent while SUV sales decreased by 26.4 percent according to the BMW press release.

    Mini Cooper: Up 2.1 percent
The Mini division of BMW reported results which bested last April’s sales numbers however the brand is still down more than 10 percent when comparing the number of cars sold so far to date between 2007 and 2006

Mercedes: Down 1.8 percent
Mercedes posted slightly lower sales for April when compared to April of last year, but also posted its best year to date sales numbers ever for April. The sales increase seems to be primarily based on the strength the new GL SUV’s sales which were up more than 200 percent.

Audi: Up 9.4 percent
Audi’s sales increased this April by almost a thousand cars when compared to last April and the company’s press release stated the brand was on track for a record year. Audi saw significant sales gains from both its A4/S4 and its TT line of sports cars.

Volkswagen: Down 7 percent
Volkswagen Eos had strong sales this April but it couldn’t make up for the large decreases in sales of the rest of the VW range. The Touareg, Passat, and Jetta all posted significantly lower sales this April when compared to last April.

Hyundai: Down 4.6 percent
Hyundai announced sales in the US declined in April, but sighted positives such as increasing sales of the new Sante Fe SUV, marketwatch.com reported.

Not much of a surprise for Ford there, they are in a proper mess.

Chrysler better not take that gain as a mandate to keep doing what they’re doing. They may gain sales, but they lose profit. And it’s well known that trucks and SUVs are not the super-market they once were and probably will never be again.

I like Toyota’s lame ass excuse for posting a loss.

A 4% retail sales increase for GM, which is good news, but goes to show just how long it is going to take for GM to wean themselves off their reliance on fleet sales. Still, at a time when they are dropping fleet numbers at a rapid pace, a 9% loss is acceptable in a long-term-vision sense. Could be better, could be a lot worse.

Yes LLN children lets all laugh at Toyota. Other than Chrysler, who spent 4x the cash to move their vehicles, Toyota had the least sales decline for the month as compared to the big 3.

From the linked article:

“The auto industry spent $2,342 per vehicle sold in April”

“Of the top six automakers, Chrysler, owing to its truck and SUV-heavy lineup, spent the most at $3,994 per vehicle. Toyota spent the least at $944″

I know you’ll grasp at anything to take a shot at Toyota or point our a weakness but you really should try harder.

So will LLN be posting the raw sales data for each manufacturer? That info is much more useful than the summaries linked to here.

Buick: Down 28.2 percent

Dead brand walking. Fleet sales are a big lifesaver for Buick, and with GM cutting back on rentals, Buick is in sink-or-swim mode. Either they become attractive to retail customers, or they die.

Cadillac: Up 1.8 percent

Cadillac is a healthy brand, posting a minor sales increase even before gems like the new CTS and refreshed STS arrive.

Chevrolet: Down 3.9 percent

Chevy is a difficult brand to pinpoint. The Cobalt is still doing well, though slowing. Aveo, even though I can’t see why, keeps selling strong. I would ascribe most of this loss to a reduction in Impala fleet sales, and many consumers waiting for the new Malibu.

GMC: Up 16.7 percent

I personally am sick of all the crossovers and what not, but I can’t deny they are comfortable, well-built vehicles. Consumers seem to still want them, if not in quite the fervor of years past.

Hummer: Down 12.3 percent

Hummer…eh…hard to talk about Hummer. Hummer is the epitome of a niche brand, and doesn’t follow the normal market directions. They will never sell lots of Hummers.

Pontiac: Down 13 percent

Tough numbers to swallow, but really not all that bad for the keepers of GM’s most heavily-fleeted vehicle, the Grand Prix. Lower-trim G6s have also made their way to fleets previously, so the reduction in fleet sales is going to hit Pontiac volume-wise pretty hard. Also, I’m sure many potential consumers are waiting for the new G8. In the big picture, Pontiac is staying afloat alright even though it’s basically on the backburner while Saturn is getting most of the revitalizing attention.

Saab: Down 19 percent

Dead brand walking #2. I like the Saab 9-3, but it is way too much extra money for not much improvement over its Epsilon sisters. A little uprated on the interior yes, but the 3.6L V6 in the Aura XR and G6 GTP is superior to the silly imported 2.8L turbo.

Saturn: Up 28.5 percent

Saturn has been born anew, and it shows. Even with GM’s inability to advertise effectively, Aura is doing well, Outlook is doing well, and Astra is highly anticipated.

I’ll admit I’m holding off on purchasing a new sedan in order to take a look at the new Malibu and the new Accord. Gas prices have hit $2.90+ here in the South so I’m sure a lot of people are going to be holding on to their cars longer in order to pay to drive them. This could be a repeat of what has been happening in the housing market with subprime loans. Think of all those people that are upside down on 60 month and 72 month loans. They may not be coming back for more punishment for some time.

Ranking by automakes’ sales this year so far:
Rank/Company/April Sales/%change/2007YTD sales/%ch.

1 General Motors 307,554 -1.9 1,205,997 -6.5
2 Ford 227,414 -13.0 866,506 -13.2
3 DaimlerChrysler 213,999 1 807,233 -2
[Chrysler] 193,104 2 730,353 -3

6 Nissan 71,124 -11.1 350,105 0.045
7 Hyundai/Kia 65,144 -5.4 242,952 -1.4
8 BMW 28,692 0.5 104,125 2.9
9 Mazda 21,060 -5.9 100,134 11.7
10VW/Audi 27,192 -2.7 98,552 -0.6

GM and Ford heavy truck sales are removed, so numbers may vary from other sources. Percent changes may vary because some are daily sales rate percent changes while others are volume changes. Either way, Honda cannot get down to -9%….this month.

The problem with Nissan is that they actually pulled forward a lot of buyers into March when they had their big March sales event. So, other than having like six consumers wanting to buy ANY car from any manufacturer in April, Nissan had pulled forward a huge chunk of sales, meaning that most people who were considering a Nissan already bought and left Nissan wont for customers (probably similar with the Ford Fusion, although it wasn’t quite as bad as Nissan).

I love Toyota’s excuse. Would those two days have really made such a big difference? Do they really sell that many cars in two days? And wouldn’t that apply to other auto makers as well?

I’m not really surprised that Lincoln sales are up and the rest of Ford is down. They are doing with Lincoln what they need to do with all brands: make one bold, different design theme and center all cars around it.

I’m kinda surprised Jeep is up 40%. I thought people weren’t buying too many suvs because of high gas prices.

Well, General Motors growth is stil on pace regardless of this months news. It shouldn’t be more than a month till they regain the top spot from Toyota and then significantly outpace them for months after. Those sales will most likely come at the expense of Ford and Chrysler which shouldn’t disappoint anyone. And Import sales have obviously crested (First QTR) as it seems they’re on a downward slope finally. GM’s dominance on the landscape is really starting to take shape and it’ll only get better once people get out of their imports and into some real cars.

For those that love to hate GM, their YTD Retail sales, excluding intentionally reduced low margin daily rental fleet sales, were positive when compared with 2006 when adjusted for the number of selling days (2 less in 2007). Further on a sales adjusted basis, pickup YOY Pickup sales were also positive when compared with 2006. Apples to Apples….them are the facts!

Nissan is down – big surprise. I don’t think the new Altima is faring well, mainly because the “package pricing” scheme ends up being a ripoff. If I simply want to add leather to an Altima I end up paying about $4k due to the linked/required packages to leather. If they rethink this strategy their sales may go up, and I like the Altima, but not when I can get what I want elsewhere for thousands less.
