Canadian soldiers managed to escape a blast that killed a 10-year-old Afghan boy and injured a farmer on Wednesday largely due to new armored Mercedes-Benz G-Wagons. The Canadian Forces are slowly replacing a fleet of aging jeeps with the Mercedes G-Wagons and other vehicles. The G-Wagon suffered only a broken bumper, a smashed headlight and other scratches and dents. The basic wagon costs $44,000 and the full armour kit costs an additional $86,000. The original package cost $126 million, but in July 2004, the federal government exercised the option to buy another 357 G-Wagons — 20 of them armoured — for $81 million. It’s worth nothing that Mercedes has discontinued its iconic G-Class, and will likely replace it with a GL-Class SUV in 2007.
