Aston “fully intends” to build F430, Gallardo rival

05/08/2007, 1:13 PM

By Nick

Aston Martin will build a new sports car to compete with the Ferrari F430 and Lamborghini Gallardo, according to American investor John Sinders, who is now a co-owner of the British company.

“We fully intend to go straight at the Ferrari F430 and the Lamborghini Gallardo,” Sinders told Automobile magazine in a recent interview.

Aston originally considered making the V8 Vantage a mid-engine sports car, but management later decided the front-engine design was the only one that made sense financially at the time.

Late last month, David Richards, leader of the consortium that purchased Aston from Ford, said a mid-engine car was possible, but not before the 2010 model year.

Sinders also said Aston will expand its engine lineup to make its existing models appeal to more customers. Many enthusiasts have demanded a more powerful version of the V8 Vantage, for example. Expect all naturally aspirated engines: “I think you will see us stay away from turbos and superchargers,” he said.

As for a sports utility vehicle? “Certainly, we won’t do an SUV,” he said.

Certainly it has to be an actual better car than the F430 and the Gallardo to sell. Branding-wise most people would prefer Ferrari and Lambo a lot more…

i think aston are getting a bit ****y and overexcited because they have a new owner and are therfore interested in taking over the world. aston shouldnt even try and compete in this market they should just sticking to making fine GT’s and perfecting the DB9.

I would go with Aston Martin simply to have something atypical amongst Supercars or Exotics.

I would go Aston Martin because I think Lambo is played out. Every wealthy guy and his mother has one.

I agree with W16 and Jazz – “most people” who can afford automobiles of this caliber know what an Aston is and would most definately prefer it if the performance is equal to or greater than the Gallardo/F430

IMO – Aston is the classiest car on the road today and if they were to build it the wait list would be just as long

Just read about this today in Automobile Magazine. I don’t really think Sinders & Co. will be able to make Aston the premier high end sports automaker, as he says he intends on making it, but I think he’s got the right idea and Aston is in good hands/headed in the right direction.

My mother knows absolutely nothing about cars, but likes the Aston because of its looks. With Prodrive behind them I wouldn’t scoff either, they’ve proven that they can turn their racing knowledge into a street machine with the P2. Granted, it’s a completely different type of car, but the expertise is there. Also, I’d love to see them take on Ferrari and Porsche in ALMS GT2, they proved that they could hang in GT1.

bacalao, i dont see how anyone could just walk by an aston martin. i thnk most ppl here would agree that astons have always looked great and the newest models all look damn good in my opinion. seeing a v8 vantage makes my day every time, it just looks so good and even standing still you can tell its fast, it might actually look a bit faster than it actually goes haha but the sound it makes is unbelievable

A lot of people will disagree but I think Aston has got more going for them than Ferrari or Lambo. Don’t get me wrong the Italians build great cars and they’ll always have a large base but they just seem so predictable right now. Aston has probably one of the best designs that the world has ever seen and now they are starting to back it up with much needed performance. I see AM becoming a big hitter like Ferrari and Lambo and majorly cutting into their sales. Ford did a great thing for the automotive world by letting them go to Prodrive cause now they’ll be able to reach their full potential, just look at all the announcements Prodrive has made already about upcoming models.

I like the DB9 and all but do they really think they can make a competitor for the Gallardo? THE F430? I personally dont think so! I think they should just update the DB9, performancewise. And I hope there not thinking of a car that will surpass the LP640 and 599 GTB, etc.

“These people not only have the money, but they REALLY know what a car-brand should be all about.”

Ok, I’m an exception as I can afford a Bugatti without breaking my wallet and I prefer Aston over the horse or bull but I’m in the auto business so I don’t count. Most of the people you referred to don’t know much about their purchase except that it’s a Ferrari and will give them the bragging rights they need. You can try to disagree but the sales numbers support my point. But I agree with most here that the ones who prefer to get something far more exotic would prefer an Aston, if only for that sake.

Veda is right, I was reading something about a Bentley owners’ gathering type deal and they had a race driver/instructor who had to show the owners that their car did not in fact have a V8, but rather a V12. They were also convinced that it was rear drive when it was AWD.

If you look back at AM’s history they were of equal caliber as Ferrari and Lambo. The Italians were AMs biggest competitors both on the track and street, the rivavlry could be comparable to what the Mustang vs Camaro is. But when Aston started having financial problems they were unable to keep up the pace while the other two manufacturers sky-rocketed to what they are now. So I see all this as AM playing catch-up to Ferrari and Lambo. Ford gave them the financing to get back on their feet and get the public’s attention again, and then realized they had reached the end of the line with AM had had to sell. Honestly, I cant think of any other firm than Prodrive that would be better suited to run Aston Martin accept for maybe Cosworth (accept for that’s still Ford).

Bring it on. And even if it looks just like your conventional Aston Martin, it’d still look better than a Ferrari or Lambo. (My opinion.) Don’t get me wrong – the Italian offerings look really good, in a purely functional & racy sort of way, but Aston Martins have always been simply beautiful. And I wouldn’t even make direct performance comparisons either. I don’t think people buy Aston Martins looking for Ferrari or Lambo beating performance.
