The Italians were AMs biggest competitors both on the track and street, the rivavlry could be comparable to what the Mustang vs Camaro is. But when Aston started having financial problems they were unable to keep up the pace while the other two manufacturers sky-rocketed to what they are now. So I see all this as AM playing catch-up to Ferrari and Lambo. Ford gave them the financing to get back on their feet and get the public's attention again, and then realized they had reached the end of the line with AM had had to sell. Honestly, I cant think of any other firm than Prodrive that would be better suited to run Aston Martin accept for maybe Cosworth (accept for that's still Ford).
