With its newest addition, the Aston Martin Vantage GT2, Aston Martin Racing completes the line-up by offering a racing car for the GT1, GT3 and GT4 classes with its DBR9, DBRS9, and Vantage N24, respectively. While specs such as horsepower or weight were not disclosed, the car is based on Aston Martin’s Vantage road car and will be powered by the 4.3 liter V8 engine found in the road car. The Vantage GT2 will be capable of running on E85 bio-ethanol as well as standard race gas.
The Vantage GT2 will make its racing debut on April 5 at the first round of the Le Mans Series in Barcelona with the James Watts Automotive racing outfit. The Vantage GT2 will also be campaigned by Drayson-Barwell in bio-ethanol trim in the American Le Mans Series, while Gigawave will run the car in the FIA GT championship.

Aston Martin running in GT2 class should be very interesting to see how they stack up against the Porsche 911 GT3RSR’s, GT3RS’s and Ferrari F430’s. I think the DB9R and DB9RS will do just fine. GT1 however is becoming an almost non-existent class with the only real competition just against the Corvette C6R. I really think the Le-Mans organization needs to restructure and reorganize GT1, or do something to attract more manufacturers to participate in GT1, Can’t wait though to see the battle rage on in GT2!

The GT classes will be restructured around 2010. The FIA and ACO are currently discussing it. The running theme is that GT1 will be eliminated, and GT2 will be split into two classes based on powerplants to form a new GT1 and GT2.

Not enitrely accurate there the359. few ACTUAL details have emerged from the ACO regarding their thoughts on GT classes. It does look like GT1 will be eliminated as the engines have been made an allowance to go prototype racing, see Aston’s P1 car this season, as for what replaces it 2 main ideas are the most common for now. One is to make the GT move like was made before, GT2 becomes top and GT3 cars become the lower class. The other I have seen a lot is to make it a one GT class at LM/ALMS/LMS racing and let the FIA do whatever they want as they have for the last few years anyway. Running 2 classes by engine ize most likely won’t work out too well as it would probably make the classes split by the ocean, big engines in the ALMS and smaller engines in LMS and they would meet most likely at LM or the smaller class would be dominated by the 911 as it had been before Ferrari came back. I’d guess the divide would be around 4L, making 430, V8 Vantage, Corvette, Panoz, “Ford” GT-R in one class and the 911 and if it does go racing the Nissan GT-R in another, depending on turbo equivalence.
