Aston Martin recruits ex-Tesla, Harley exec

10/13/2009, 11:11 AM

By Andrew Ganz

British high-performance car manufacturer Aston Martin has hired Michael van der Sande as its new chief commercial officer. Van der Sande previously served as head of Harley-Davidson’s European operations before taking over as Tesla’s senior vice president for marketing, a job he held for less than a year.

Van der Sande will work out of Aston Martin’s Gaydon, United Kingdom, office and, according to company CEO Ulrich Bez, van der Sande “will help us to further develop Aston Martin’s presence around the world.”

Aston Martin, like most high-end automakers, has been hit especially hard by the global recession. Sales are down to less than half of what they were a year ago.

My only hope, automotive wise, is that Aston Martin is able to survive the current economic times. Odds are that it is far from over and that a double dip is highly likely. As for the automotive sector, the long-overdue culling and rationalization have yet to occur – a matter of time.

There are few visual delights that inspire the soul to the degree of:

I’m not into EV’s, range extended or otherwise, but I would buy a Fisker because of the tie into the lineage.

God Bless Aston Martin^i^

DB9;-)

PS. Damn, I’m not even religious:-)) Cool Dawg, me thinks I just found religion… lol;-))

Were it not for the fortuity of a charismatic James Bond movie, Aston Martin would have vanished off the faces of the earth decades ago. Today, as always, the cars are sold in such low numbers as to be virtually irrelevant to most of us. This so-called news item is therefore the LLN non-story du jour.

Ditch that rebadged iQ and build a 3-Series or lower end 6-Series competitor. an Aston priced like a 3-Series would be a winner, but please, don’t make it a DB9 clone!
