After several months of negotiations, Daimler has reportedly cut off talks with Aston Martin over the development of its next-generation Maybach cars.

As reported on these pages before, Maybach was holding talks with Aston Martin over the development of its next-generation of Rolls-Royce rivaling vehicles. Per the terms of the early negotiations, Aston Martin was to design and build the next-generation of Maybach vehicles in exchange for access to Mercedes-Benz' V8 and V12 engines.

However, the deal has reportedly hit an impasse over costs. No dollar figures have yet been revealed, but you don't often hear of things being too expensive for brands like Maybach and Aston Martin, indicating the investment was astronomically high.

It remains to be seen what the news means for the future of the Maybach brand, but Mercedes is said to be considering developing the next-generation Maybach in-house. Such a move would allow Daimler to keep a lid on development costs.

Maybach sold 157 units worldwide in 2010, well off of its original sales target of 1,500 units per year.
