Aston Martin’s Lagonda plans on hold

07/21/2009, 11:56 AM

By Drew Johnson

After a less-than-overwhelming reception at the 2009 Geneva Motor Show, Aston Martin has decided to shelve its Lagonda revival plans. Lagonda showed off a four-door crossover concept at the Geneva show, but the production version has been put on hold with the entire project in jeopardy of cancellation.

According to Edmunds, Aston’s Lagonda plans are on indefinite hold, with the strong possibility that entire program could be abandoned. In addition to the Lagonda concept’s luke-warm reception, the downtrodden global economy is making it difficult to make a business case for adding another premium brand to the market.

“We have several sources ready to invest upward of a quarter-billion pounds, but the timing right now is simply wrong,” Aston Martin head Ulrich Bez told Edmunds. “We have some work to do yet, and it takes a lot of investment.”

Aston Martin is mulling the idea of testing the waters again with a second Lagonda concept, but a lack of internal leadership could ultimately derail those plans. All things considered, it seems that the odds of a production Lagonda are extremely thin.

I’m surprised it took them so long to put it on hold cough cancel it. Not only its plain ugly but also completely does not fit their image.

It was a stupid idea to begin with. At least they won’t follow through with it.

Good smart business decision. Now only if we can get Acura to do the same thing to the ZDX. I guess not everyone has brains these days.

I like it. Would have been a nice competitor for the ML 63 AMG. BWM x5M and x6M etc

I remember the old Aston Martin capturing and holding my attention span.
The new concept doesn’t capture and hold crap for me.

Lagonda, Shblagonda. The entire company is irrelevant and deserves to be pulled from life support.

I am buying a new car, but I am using the Cash for Clunkers program. Check out this guys write up about what he is doing to get some freakin sweet deals. It is at http://www.slickbudget.com/cash4clunkers.html. It really opens your eyes to getting a new car. Interesting read to say the least. He has a write up for a Mustang Coupe Premium using the program.

Perhaps the grille was not literally ‘Aston’ enough like that little Toyota thing they are working on…
